CB900 Custom vs F

Hey all, I'm looking at getting into a Cb900 as a highway/ long distance bike a little more comfortable than the CB750. My question is what are the differences between the Cb900F and the Cb900 custom ? Are there any specific years that are better than others? So far I've found a 1980 and a 1983 900 custom for sale in my area. I do like the looks of the 900F better though so was hopeing to junkyard/ebay the tank, sidecovers and seat/tail section and convert a custom to a F. Is that possible? Any frame or engine differences ?
Any help would be awsome!    also how do guys like the 900's?

Custom has different cosmetics; rear wheel; exhausts; bars and gearing (from memory)
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Have you gone to www.cb1100f.net. You might have better luck getting the info. your looking for there, as they are geared to that era more than this site. :)

Other than the obvious styling difference - cruiser vs. sportbike,  the Custom used shaft drive, which necessitated an "auxiliary" gearbox to change the direction of the power from transmission countershaft output to shaft drive input.  While they were at it, Honda added a two-speed gearbox to this gearbox.  So, effectively you get a dual-range, 10-speed model.  5 speeds in the tranny, and high and low range in the aux box.  Had a little aux. gearshift lever above & behind the normal shift lever.  Kind of a gimmick, really, but it makes the engine overall longer than the F model.

Otherwise, I THINK there are enough differences in mounting tabs, mounting brackets, etc. to make the conversion from C to F tricky.

For highway use, unless you use a windshield to block the windblast, I think you'll be more comfortable with the F's more lean-into-the-wind riding position.

Another thing to consider would be the 1000C / 1100F models.  They were each one-year-only bikes.  The 1100F replaced the 900F, and the 1000C replaced the 900C.  Same deals with the two-range sub-trans.

Never rode an F, but the 10 speed ROCKS!!!
