Engine Prep
« on: August 01, 2005, 10:13:32 AM »
Im prepping my engine to be painted on a K4.  Anyone have any tricks to get all the grime off the lower part of the engine.  Also, how do you get the grime off the fins and should I paint those as well.  I am using the universal aluminum VHT paint.  Painted the oil filter case after cleaning it and its looks PRETTY.  Wanna get the block painted soon.

I used brakleen on my engine, it knocks the stuff right off and leaves no residue, carb cleaner will work on some of the nastier stuff as well. If you want to get down to the bare metal, aircraft paint stripper will do the job, just have lots and lots of water on hand for the rinse or you might not have an engine left to paint!

No reason you cant paint the fins. Other people have painted them and they were painted from the factory I think.
