eBay prices... Ridiculous or not?
« on: February 04, 2008, 04:24:21 pm »
I was perusing thorugh eBay for some parts for my '71 CB750 and found a decent chainguard. No dents like the one I have from my old bike ('72). Was at $10 yesterday, not at $55, and I imagine it'll double that by the time it's ended. Seems a bit much for a chain guard, maybe I'll stick with my incorrect part or just fix up the part from my '72. I do have a sand blast cabinet and HVLP gun.

Looking through other stuff... Just wow, have these bikes got expensive or what?

I think its mainly a winter-prices thing? I have noticed a lot of the parts I repeatedly search for on feeBay have gotten crazy-high prices the last few months - way more than over the summer. I think a lot of people are all working on their projects at the same time and anxious to get the parts fast, so they are getting bid up like crazy.

I have literally seen the exact same parts go one week for $30 and then the next week for $148 - its nuts!  :o

Interesting - he says it's a '71 metal chain guard. I have a '71 CB750 I bought new and it has a plastic chain guard. When did they change to metal?
Cheers,
Cliff.

My K1 chainguard is also plastic.  Pretty much just a longer K0 guard.

The "short" chainguard wasn't even used in all the K0's. It was superseded by the long one during K0's production and along K1's to be replaced by the metal one from K2 onwards.

eBay seems to have everything but.............they essentially market nation wide. Don't you look there first? I just saw a really nice local cl350 sell around $2K. I'm curious what a nice SOHC4 sells for these days. I paid $1600 for a sound restorable 550F last year.

Don't forget to click the "more buying options - add store inventory" I have seen people bidding up parts higher than the buy it now on store inventory. It won't come up if you don't select it.

I just lucked out. Bought a fuel tank for my bike for $52 and in great shape, no dents and the correct colour. I found it when I searched "Honda chopper" it was listed with no mention of what it was off of. I recognised it righ away. If someone doesn't know what it is, they don't know what to charge. You can still find a deal, you just have to look for it! Don't rely on ebay alone. I have great luck with a local wrecker.

Yep - totally. . .  .I HATE how feeBay changed the search function a while back and try to 'hide' store results (because they make more money off of auctions - bastards). You DON'T search the feeBay stores unless you 'opt in' first, in the advanced search functions, down towards the bottom.

If you don't, you still might see in small text at the bottom of your search results, "check eBay stores for more results" or something to that effect, but its hard to notice. Totally no excuse for this kind of shoddy interface and playing games like this but that is the feeBay way (guess they are too busy running around buying up companies that have nothing to do with selling items, like Skype, than to work on their core product)

Also, I have totally seen a couple guys trying to outbid one another on a part that was in the stores at the same time, for far less. . . . LOL.

I too have had good luck with generic searches like 'honda chopper' to find good deals on stuff someone couldn't ID correctly.

The chainguard on my '73 750 is plastic, and I could swear that all of the earlier ones that I've looked at are plastic too.... :-\

Most important thing to check on a CB750 chainguard is the distance between mounting holes; mount holes on plastic early ones differ from metal, line-up different on swingarm. Of course, you can change swingarm to make them fit .

While searching for an OEM 350F1 exhaust (dream on) on Ebay I saw loads of parts that are still available from Honda listed. In a lot of cases I can get the same parts at wholesale. I think a lot of people are told by lazy dealers that parts aren't available when they can't be bothered to look.

I totally agree with Cadunkle, these feebay prices are getting ridiculous.I thought with a cb550, prices may have been a little bit cheaper but this hasnt been the case. A few examples  a Yoshumura style exhaust probably not the real deal with a 200.00 starting price with a buy it now price of 500.00. Another example is those  chrome gauge covers selling between 50.00 and 100.00.WOW! Thats some profit. My hats off to them. I seen a 1975cb550/750ss sales broshure sell for 98.00.Ive got the same broshure in mint condition and tried my luck, the highest it got was 48.00.So Im guilty too.I payed 10.00 for it at at a Walnecks swap meet.  We as collectors and garage built builders have to educate ourselves do a little more shopping around and not get caught up in the bidding wars. When searching for my parts I did some internet cruising and came upon crc2online.com and found exactly what I was looking for and within my budget:
chrome 7/8 drag bars 14.95
chrome bar end morrors pair 29.90
chrome speedo/tach covers 29.95
headlight visor  7inch          8.95
delivered to my door in 2 days 7.90
I hope this helps ;D
