just about at my wits end...
« on: February 08, 2008, 07:05:16 AM »
I have a 76 750k that was a storage unit repossession 10yrs ago and no title, it was last inspected here in missouri back in 1985, well marriage and a family took over for the next 10yrs, but at the time I got the bike I had it Immediately checked by the police and they said it was not stolen and in fact it had been so long since it was registered it wasn't even in the system... Well bring it all up to today I have been researching for the last week for a title. Go to the dmv they give me a bunch of abandoned property forms that are actually for tow truck companys, sent several emails the the department of revenue and they said I have to try to contact the original owner and wait until i get no contact, can't figure that one out since there is not record of the last owner in the system at least they said I only have to put forth good faith in tracking owner. I also contacted the highway patrol and they said I have to go through the court to get ownership granted and then go back to them for a dor-551 form (physical inspection of the vin and safety inspection, well contacted the court and they don't even know what I am talking about..... >:(
I am now onto looking up the international title service, they seem to be a pretty logical way to go about this but now i am waiting for their phones to free up so i can call them and see what type of power of attorney to get and i think i can get a title from. Has any body else had any good luck with going thru them. Sorry for the sob story but that is what I was getting to, to see if any one else has used them yet.  Sucks too I paid 300 bucks for the bike and its in mint condition.

Around here I think you pay for a search which brings up last address the MV branch has on last registered owner, its like 25.00 or something.

Then you send a registerd letter to that address, if it comes back unopened, you then get a notarized statement that you legally bought the bike and they transfer it.

But you need a receipt.

My buddy gave two XS 11,s to another buddy, he has since put money into them and has one ready to go. However the buddy that owned them, (1 was registered with him since new) passed away shortly thereafter... his son became executor.. but has done nothing with the estate.. so we have to work that one out soon, and he did not get a receipt.. we will see how that goes soon..

BTW if you send  reistered mail to someone that lost their stuff, they rarely open it or sign for it, even if they are still at the address..

thank yo guys so much for your help, i have not been able to get a previous owner address because it been out of the system for so long ::) but the ITS sound really promising, as soon as I can get past the busy signal when I call. I'm hoping I can get the ball rolling now with this so when the weather gets better i can do more than ride this beast on the outer highway road....

you should be able to get ITS paper work for a transfer title online. I agree it is well worth the money.

I don't know what state or country you are in, but in Texas you only need to apply for a bonded title. I've done it and it isn't hard. You fill out one form, you buy a bond from a bonding company, and they give you a title. The bond guarantees that if the previous owner turns up and can prove the bike was stolen you will pay him/her fair market value for the bike - which for a 32-year-old bike isn't going to be much. They base it on NADA values. In any case, you keep the bike with a clean title.

Check to see of your state accepts titles from a title service. Some, such as Massachusetts, no longer do.

I have been told that this will work in Missouri. I haven't tried it yet.
Do keep us posted, please..
