Shelf life - Oil
« on: February 18, 2008, 04:18:59 PM »
Im curious if unopened oil has a shelf life? I have about 12qts of oil that have been setting on my garage shelf for like 2 1/2 years and finally found a reason to use it.. Now im curious if I should since I dont if its still good.. Might sound like a door knob of a question but *shrug* I have no clue.

Thanks..

I would say it is okay if sealed and unused.

"ExxonMobil recommends a five year maximum shelf-life for engine oils, including Mobil 1."

Found here:

...I bet it's longer than that, they are in the business of selling the stuff  ;)

Not that it has anything to do with this discussion but........I wonder how long it was buried in the ground before it sat on the shelf for two years.

I'm not sure I would trust the manufacturer. After all, they would rather sell you some new stock, right? ;)

Having said that, here's one source  http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html if you scroll down, on various types of oils. Engine oil recommendation is three years.

I would not put it in newer engines like from the 1950's to the present. They had none of the additives. Our CB would chew it up in seconds. It is a great keepsake.
