Z1 brake hoses
« on: February 21, 2008, 02:43:08 AM »
G`day guys
i need new brakes line for the fornt of my f1 750, wanted to go with braided lines and have been told to expect to pay about $100 for the two lines to be made in aus, i was just checking the Z1 site and saw their lines with the screw in ends......
Has anyone used these?
Are they any good?
Would it be better getting them made here?
Any thoughts or experience with these would be appreciated
cheers

Here's the thing to consider:

If you have the hoses custom made, the ends will be a press fit rather than a screw. A screw will have a better chance of leaking if not installed properly. If a leak occurs, and you've had them custom made, you can go back to the maker and say, "Hey..."

That being said, I am thinking of going with the screw in end style with my K8 when I get the front end together.

I did not buy my brake line at Z1(they had not them at that time),but i have bought the same companie Goodridge, and i'm really satisfied of the quality and finish, and if you are afraid of any leaking why not put a touch of locktite on the thread ???

My brother like my line so much that he will buy the same for his GL1000,but this time from Z1,because they have good price and they dont charge to much of shipping.

if these are the put together lines they work well, ive had a set on my panhead for 15 years and have not had any problems at all, just pay attention to the directions and you`ll be ok.also use never-sieze on the threads of the fittings.

I installed Russel braided lines, these have the separate ends that screw on. They have been excellent and I have no trouble recommending them.
These lines exist because of laws that regulate vehicle safety components. In the USA brake lines must be DOT certified to be legally used in a vehicle driven on public streets. Each brake line. With hundreds of motorcycle models plus modifications, haveing each line certified would be a nightmare. Somebody got the idea of certifying a variety of lengths of hose and a variety of ends that screw on, voila: DOT legal aftermarket brake lines without certifying each separate bike's line.
I have never heard of anyone being stopped or ticketed for "illegal" brake lines, and probably someone is just worrying about lawsuits by making sure their products have DOT tags. There are a lot of aftermarket parts that pretend to be for "off road use" only - but the manufacturers know that their customers are driving on the highways.
If there's a hydraulic shop near you, they should be able to make a set of brake lines using hydraulic braided hose and crimped on connectors. These are - in my experience - perfectly safe and at least equal to any DOT "legal" set you buy. However... if one blows out in a panic stop and you have a messy crash, a really crafty insurance company might be able to screw you over extremely well....

i've used them, and they go together quite well. the screw on fittings help with orienting the hose in the right direction once you have the banjo tightened down.  like them better then the custom fit lines i've had made. price is comparable.

I always made my own, best way to get a nice fit. Used to get stuff from Earls supply, when they finally came out with -3, I had to have.!!

From my chrome m/c straight out and into a drilled stem nut to a T under the bottom tree. Then 2  45 degree forged fittings then the line to the calipers....167.00 I think in 78 or so and I had to assemble!!.. nice looking setup, get exactly the curves and arcs you want.

Should mention, if you got duals, might not hurt to pack a block off plug when travelling..one year I broke a line in Sturgis.. cant remember how, and was without brakes for a bit.. finally got one made at an airport.. fat black rubber with greenyyellow fitting on each end!! :o

Lines do break or get tweaked once in a while or vandalized.. its nice to be able to fix them or shorten brakeline if you change bars or forks..
