an electrical question

morning,

I'd like to know why the wire that powers the coils on a cb 500 has to go through the rectifier.

The only (as if it's not enough) thing that goes through the rectifier is the current from the alternator, then to the regulator and then to the bike's electrical/battery. All of the bikes electrical then uses the D.C. current to operate. So you're not using the rectifier just for the ignition but for everything.
