any telephone technicians out there?
« on: March 01, 2008, 07:41:14 PM »
When I have my modem turned on I have a lot of static on the telephone. When I unplug it, it clears up instantly. This has been a problem since we first got the high speed internet modem. I tried all the filters that came with the modem. The static sounds like the static on the line without the use of a filter, just not as bad. The internet works fine. Is there a fix for this? is that a fault in the wiring in my house or is it a modem issue? We just got the house, it has the older telephone wiring colors in it. The red, green and yellow are hooked up, the black is not.

I'm not a phone technician but I suspect the old lines. At my folks old farm house, when they get a fax, they can hear it on the phone line even though they're different lines.
Might be worth giving Bell a call... If that's your provider, but I think they're Bell's crapy lines anyway  :D

Not sure what the black wire is for.. maybe it's a ground?

Hi,
You need to install a filter to your phone line.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSL_filter

Here we can get it from the supplier or buy it from adsl stores.

Cheers,

Jona

I had the same problem with my DSL after several years....even bypassing all the house wiring by connecting at the outside box. Turns out the problem was the modem on the phone companies end in the box across the street. When they replaced it the noise went away.
