Who really Cares??
« on: March 02, 2008, 12:31:30 PM »
Why does it makes a difference to some on here if a person runs something they like on their bike.

Run what you like, even if something "better" is out there..

If you like the looks of a magneto and have the means to get one fly at it.. it wont hurt another rider if it takes a few hp to run it.

Same thing for pipes, carbs.. whatever.. Want to run a big ugly gairing, or a huge cafwe tank..fly at it.. aint gonna cause me to loose any sleep.

Now of course you may want to point out certain advantages of certain items or disadvantages or points you dont like about a certain piece.. but you dont have to be a missionary  ??? and convert everyone to what you decide is best.. or maybe I am wrong and you do have to??

When I hear it must work  & be the best, cuz Joe Spudnick and Floont Arntney run it :o :D , I just want to hurl.. Jeez can no one have a mind of their own anymore??

When I start buying parts just because the majority decide to run it... just put me out of my misery already... ..glad there is a forum so we can vent once in a while...

Rugged individualism all the way! ;D

I have always thought of your bike as an extension of your tastes so if you like it, do it. I'll listen to any idea that has merit and if you can prove that speed racer is getting more performance because of it the I'll think about it.
There are old bikers and there are bold bikers but there are very few old, bold bikers.

I'm assuming this question was brought on by some of the posts in the "Maxi Dwell" thread.  If not, then I apologize.

Seems to me you stirred up a little #$%* with another member and are now wondering why someone might have gotten defensive.  In that particular thread I think it was the sentence, "Some rider actually enjoy maintaining their machines..", that did it.

That kind of unfounded generalization, basically saying that someone who runs electronic rather than stock points doesn't enjoy working on their bike, is tailor-made to provoke defensive responses from other members.  Whether or not that's how you intended it is beside the point, because that's how it comes across.

Hay man Thanks i like it as well.
No i did not make this one, it is a racing seat for a HD sportster that has been modded to work on my sohc frame. You can find them at STORZ Racing but they are $$$$$$.
I got lucky and got the one i have off my uncle's wrecked race bike back in 1999

I have made a mold of it and I'm hoping to produce a one part gas Tank and Seat this summer. Using the gas tank you see on my bike (i made that one).

Good luck.

Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

I never thought of it that way.. I just know there are necessary things to do on bikes, and sometimes after doing them, I look at the bike and what I just did and say, that was sort of fun. The more time you spend working on your bike  makes you get to a certain extent more a part of it. To a certain extent I try to explain what it is like being a day or more from home on a bike that only you work on.. you depend on each other to both do your part.

But you never get to that zone till you get far enough away from all your backup support.. and some have not ventured there yet.... for whatever reasons. But when you do get there it is a whole different scene.. a bit hard to explain..

I know a guy that has won the World Championship in bike building, and long ago he said.. some people just dont realize that working on the bike can be just about as much fun as riding it, he said he gets just about as much enjoyment out of either.. but he is actually creating and changing stuff and building whole bikes from scratch.

Just trying to show that time in the shop  feels different to some people..to some it is never work..

Agreed.  I thoroughly enjoy working on my bikes, at least as much as I enjoy riding them.  I also have an after market, points-less ignition on my 750.  The two are not mutually exclusive.

some of us haven't been around bikes all of our lives.
i have always wanted a motorcycle.but none of my friends had one (strange when i think about it)even now i know only 3 or 4 people that have one.
over the last couple of years i have been working on mostly minor things on my bikes.luckily my 77 550 has been running since day 1 without any problems (i probably just jinxed myself)
i have added a Dyna s,some new wires and a few other gitchy items.
but because of this forum i have found some confidence in trying things i would not have before.my first bike...a Yamaha seca 750 was costing me a small fortune in repairs because i didnt know #$%* about bikes.but i'm interested and trying to learn as much as possible.i dont think there is anything wrong with that...hey we all have to start somewhere.
basically some of us are avid learners and having fun doing it.
I'm really hoping that within a few years i will strip down an engine and put it back together with confidence.

I like what I like, but I try not to sound "superior", because that just pissses people off, and I try not to argue against logic, because I know that there are some really smart people here, with real experience, who aren't full of shiit. (not all, but most)

And if I make a mistake, and realise that I'm wrong, I'll apologise. I won't start up another thread #$%*ing about people here like a little woosy girl. Rather than use this forum to "vent" about others herein, why not just open a big can of "toughen up" and move on? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Yeah just cause some of us choose a elec unit, does not mean we hate working on our bikes. I do but I would rather mess with something new instead of checking timing and dressing points. I would rather pull off my forks or swing arm and do something there.

Personally Id rather ride....after ripping the engine out more than a few times now on both my bikes, and rebuilding my K2 from the ground up, Im looking forward to some easy riding time  ;)

Terry put it very well....

cheers
Andy

I would suppose so. Since I have yet to have reason to pull my engine,I dont have the issue yet. I am waiting to get an oil leak from my 30year old seals since I used synthetic last summer. I guess that myth is BUSTED! ;D

I'm relatively new here but I am no stranger to working on or building bikes.  I do get enjoyment out of both.  However, you do get to a point where you just want to ride.  I mean isn't that why we build and work on these things?

As for building a bike, build it how you want it.  I like to share my builds or work I'm doing with other enthusiasts.  However, in the end I'm going to do what I want.  If others don't like it....that's fine.  They're not riding it.  To each their own.

manifest destiny= you are in control of your own life, in the hustle and bustle some poeple tend to follow others and there is always a leader in every pack. Now having said that I also love to work on my own bikes as much i like to ride them . Hell my old honda 73' elsinore 250 I had to work on it every time I rode it( I think thats because i rode it like i stole it ;D), but still thats the fun in it, I also made a lexan and aluminum points cover for my 76 750k just so I can see the mechanics of it working, why you ask because its cool and when you goose the throttle at nite you can see em spark ;D ;D ;D, so to each his own and don't ever forget how to use your imagination  ;D ;D ;D ;D
