I saw an article on TV about how they push performance of Diesel and Petrol Cars by putting a LPG tank in the boot which pumps Petroleum Gas into the Air Filter and increases performance tremensously. Anyone know a good resource on the NET for doing this with bikes? Has anyone done this without blowing themselves up or their engine?

Yeah I doubt that would work. You would be better off trying a nitrous system and I would not even give that much thought. It would too hard to meter all 4 carbs correctly. Think how hard it is to adjust them to run normally. If you add something like this, you will have to adjust for running the system full time. Remember, these tv people are using a vehicle with a computer and they use that to monitor everything.

There are bike kits available on some sites. but not enough information on the "DIY" system as such. 
By the way, the TV show i saw was a south african version of top gear, and they were not allowed to modigy the engine in any way. only add GAS to the air intakes. probably added oxygen too.

LPG mods are really only for places where you can't make hp the old fashoned way (the govt keeps you from doing it). If you wanna inject gas go with nitrous. the DIY kits are commonly available, the gas is out there and easy to find, and you can make some serious gains by playing around with it. A friend of mine has notrous with nitromethane injection on his caddillac, that car friggin hauls. You can probably get away with like a 10- 15 hp shot but becareful of your tolerances since Nitrous expands your piston rings.

Too much nitrous and you will start blowingthings. You will need to switch from a fiber head gasket to a cork or rubber one. YOu will also need to beef your cam chain and primary chains as well. A whole host of things will need work. If you feel the need to get more power, get a newer bike. The cost of modifying these old bikes would be very costly I think.

I think that just works the same across the board with any engine.

As far as modifying these bikes for power, if you own an old bike you are a tinkerer. and if you are a tinkerer soon you are going to look for a way to improve the thing you thinker with, and eventually you will want more. It is the american hot rodder ethic (although it seems to have spread everwhere).

Nitrous probably would cost no more than say a big bore kit, and wiseco sells enough of those to keep producing them. Furthermore if nitrous can push an antiquated kawasaki h2 into the 9 second range, what's wrong with trying to push a cb750 there too?

I'm not saying theres anything wrong with it. Just saying that unless the motor is properly prepared, you can end with big problems. It can happen with any motor but older moters may be more susceptible to problems if additional steps are not taken. Thats all. No fun to blow an engine because of some simple thing overlooked.

I dont want to go the nitrous route because of the cost and the stress it causes the engine. I was hoping to do something with a form of gas either butane, propane, or LPG.

This is kind of a dumb statment (no offense). Any kind of fuel power adder going to "stress" the engine because the point of a fuel based power adder is to casue a bigger and more efficient explosion in the cumbustion chamber. Adding any kind of power to stock parts is going to stress them. Most of Nitrous' bad rep comes from improperly tuned systems.

Cost wise power adders seem to run about the same in the long run, however I remember an article concerning nitrous vs other power adders and they said that the HP increase per dollar for nitrous was greater than for other power adders. You can get a NOS "Sneaky pete" kit from jegs for around $220 which should be enough for a 5 or 10 hp shot in a bike. The best part about a nitrous system is that you can turn it off and have a totall streetable motor (unlike a supercharger or turbo which will be running all the time).

the problem with Nitrous is that anything more than a menial shot and you need good rods and pistons (and rings). looking at building a nitrous motor it might just pay to go to a big bore kit instead since the cost for pistons and rods will be about the same as an off the shelf 836 kit.

personally I wouldn't wast my time with butane, propane, or LPG concoctions since the learning curve will be three times as high (there are drag racers who have nitroused cb750s and converted the cb750 to nitromethane, how many racers use an LPG kit) and by the time you are done it would have been three times the cost. Besides, from what I hear LPG kits are kind of a laughable thing in the countries that allow them (as in no hot rodder will take them seriously).

but hey it's your money and time.

Number of LPG setups I've seen? Zero.

I dont think it could work anyways once you add in the space needed for the tubing and tanks.
