proprely adjusted points in good condition are reliable and work well. But if you were to compare the problems that arise with point systems to the problems that arise with electronic ignitions...far mor problems occur with point systems. Tha fact can not be agrued. Let alone the maintinance that points need.

I will nevr go back to point systems. and a $60.00 Dyna S is a steal!!!

I've seen this argument go back and forward on this site for a few years now, so I guess the bottom line really is, there is not an internal combustion engine made anywhere nowadays that actually usescontact breakers (points) and for good reason, time has passed them by because technology has made them redundant.

As far as reliability goes, my 1981 Suzuki GS1000S came standard with an electronic ignition, and guess what? After 50,000 miles, it's still working fine. I've heard a few horror stories about electronic ignitions failing on the side of the road etc, but in my 36 years of riding, the only ignition failure I've witnessed was when my friend's contact breaker arm broke in half on the way back from the Bathurst bike races in 1983, on his K2. Luckily we had enough spares between us to get him home.

If you want to go electronic, go for it, I love my electronic ignitions, but if you want to keep your bike original and enjoy tinkering, then that's fine too. At least you'll have something to do in winter when the snow is halfway up your garage door! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I guess I have only ahd to monkey with my ign when I changed points. The big plus I think for elec ign is that you have  wider range of hot coils you can use and better performance with engine modification. If I leave my K stock, I might just stick with points but I dont know if I can hold myself back.!
Terry, do you have any dynas just collecting dust or acting as paper weights???

These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

OK the last question.  Where should I get this conversion kit.  I have seen some on ebay but used I do not know if it will work on my bike or not.  What is the most you would pay for used?

The Dyna site...www.dynaonline.com...lists the DS1-2 as the one for your bike. My records are at my shop...

I've seen used ones on ebay go for more than new...seen them at a bargain...got my new one on ebay for a bargain too. ;D

The cheapest I know of new...www.lowridersbysummers.com...$150

Ok this is the next last question.  Can I still use the stock coils until I can afford new ones?  And thanks for all the advise and info everyone, this has been toooooo easy.

Yes, you can still use the stock coils with the Dyna-S, but it's a good idea to eventually get some newer ones since you won't be getting the full benefit of the upgraded ignition.

Well, I have 26k miles on my 76. I personally like the points. Never had a problem and certainly haven't had to mess with them much. I think I replaced them only once or twice and I've owned the bike since 78. As for easy starting, I really don't even here mine turn over, tap the button and it's running.

How often do some of you others really HAVE to mess with your points. I can't remember the last time on mine.

Same with my old Triumph, I'd just as soon keep her original. Points worked for many years, I see no need to change.

Do the Dyna coils mount in the same place as the stockers? Any issues with mounting them?

I was also considering an upgrade to a solid state ignition system until I read this article - http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/sohcign.html .  I learned a lot and followed the advise. I now have a 76 CB750 that runs very well with points.

Good article Mike, and yeah, there are ways to improve your points ignitions, certainly careful tuning and "double springing" the points were the racers way of "blueprinting" the ignition way back when, but nowadays the period racers don't bother with points, they just fit a Dyna ignition and forget about the maintenance required to keep their race bikes running at 100% effiiciency. You'd actually be working very hard to find any "Post Classic" racers who actually run points nowadays, for this reason.

I've just got my K1 "Rat" up and running, and was surprised at how well it fires up with an old points plate that was in it when I bought the bike from a wreckers yard 7 or 8 years ago. One thing the author didn't mention in his article was the necessity to properly earth your electrical system, particularly after painting/powdercoating your frame and engine. I always run a seperate earth wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the earthing point on the ignition coils, and from the negative battery terminal to one of the 6mm screws on top of the the engine cases below the airbox.

It's unobtrusive, but helps the ignition system get all the juice it needs to perform at it's peak. Obviously keeping all the wiring harness connectors clean will help, and making sure that all the earthing points around the frame and engine are clean and free from corrosion will greatly assist the electrical system do it's job. I don't know if I'll bother upgrading this bike to an electronic ignition, I've now got 3 running CB750's so I think I'll save my last Dyna S and 3 ohm coils for my "racer" project, I think it'll benefit much more from the "EI" than one of my stockers. Cheers, Terry.  ;D

I installed a Dyna S in my 750 14 years and almost 70,000 miles ago.  I noticed a difference right away when I put the timing light on it.  The marks were rock steady, instead of wavering around as they did with the points.  Starting seemed more immediate as well, although it always started easy enough with the points.  I ran it with the stock coils for a year, then changed to Dyna coils.  I didn't notice a big difference with the Dyna coils, but one thing that became apparent over time is that the spark plugs are lasting a lot longer.  With the price of points these days, the Dyna system has paid for itself (only cost 80 bucks back then), plus I haven't had to fiddle with it all these years.

What Dyna coils did you go with? The 5-ohm or the 3-ohm?  I'm using the Dyna 5-ohm coils, and was wondering if there's any advantages or problems with going to the 3-ohm coils.

If you are running the Dyna S you should run the three Ohm coils. That is what the Dyna S is designed for.
