Dyna 2000 programable on a cb650??
« on: March 16, 2008, 01:14:15 PM »
in this post:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17895.0
It is mentioned how he trimed the OD to get the setup to work on his 650, and from his replies, it worked flawlessly.

My question is does the dyna 2000 use the same size/style trigger plate as the dyna-s?
I'm mainly interested in the dyna 2000 for it's ability to have a rev limiter.

Anyone used both a dyna-s and a dyna2000 setup?
Know of any differences?

I have contacted dynatek about this, and am still waiting on a reply.

i just fitted the dyna 2000 pickup rotor to my 650 crank last week. i think i posted about it somewhere else, but anyway:

1) the I.D. of the rotor has to be drilled larger to fit over the mounting stud on the crank. the 550 and 650 use a bolt instead, which is a smaller diameter.

2) the hole on the crank for the locating pin on the back of the dyna backing plate must also be drilled larger.

3) the timing is 180deg. out, so you either need to swap the pickups, or just reverse the wiring somewhere else in the circuit--either reverse the blue and yellow wires to the coils or just reverse the orientation of the coils (2-3 would be on the left, 1-4 on the right).

i took pictures, but the camera is still at my shop. i'll try to upload them tonight.

Did you have to trim any off of the OD of the timing plate to adapt it to the 650?

Is yours one of the dyna 2000's with the programable option on it?
How much, and where did you buy yours from?

no trimming necessary. yes, it's programmable... i think they all come that way now, though the software etc. is sold separately. i bought mine from Z1 enterprises.

Not sure if it applies to this thread... But last time I emailed Dyna about the CB650, I got this in reply

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your interest in Dynatek ignitions. Please note that we do not
have anything compatible with that model at this time.

However, we are planning on trying to make what we refer to as the "magnetic
pickup interface" ignition system. This system uses the factory "magnetic
pickup signal for running our ignition. The system looks to be about 6
months to a year away, but we are trying.

If we can be of further assistance, please contact us again.

Sincerely,
Raymond Goshorn
Customer Service Manager
Dynatek Inc.

raymond@dynaonline.com

Again, I'm not sure it applies in this circumstance.  I should say that my understanding of ignition systems isn't worth a D%$).

Cheers...Joe

Hey paul, you are mounting yours into a 550 case right?
That would be why you don't need to trim anything.
The 550 Dyna 2000 unit is the same as the 750 one I believe.
Have you compared the 650's plate diameter to the dyna?(or the stock 550's points plate?)

I tried finding the 750 points plate from my dead 750, but couldn't find it to compare to.

yeah, sorry!!!!!!!!!!! i was at the shop last night taking some pictures for you and i realized i had made that mistake. i'll post pictures showing what you would have to do-- it's still doable, but you would in fact have to modify the backing plate.

I contacted Dynatek(they have the BEST help I have had on a phone BTW)  and they are sending me a backing plate minus all the doo-dads to see if it is possible for me to modify it.

From looking at my 750 points plate( I knew it was somewhere) I will have to remove a full 10mm off of the OD to get it to fit.

I wish that the 650 had the same diameter backing plate as the 550/500/750!!!

Hey paul, Does the triggers(??) on the dyna2000 use the same bolt spacing as the ones on the 650?
Would it be possible to simply put the new triggers onto the old 650 plate?

i was going to pull out my 650 ignition (if i can find it) today when i was at the shop to determine the same thing, but i ran out of time. the slots for the mounting holes on the dyna plate are in the right place, but there is a lip on the 650 cases that interferes with the plate's O.D. here's a couple pictures:

i think it would probably be easier to mount the dyna triggers on the 650 backing plate.

here are a few showing the other modifications that were necessary. first, one showing the difference between the stud mount on the 650 crank (the thicker one on the left) and the bolt mount on the 550:

here is the end of the 650 crank and the hole for the locating pin that has been drilled larger:

here is the rotor, modified to fit over the larger 650 stud. note the locating pin:

...and mounted:

How programmable is the dyna2000?

comes with 5 different advance curves and a rev limiter up to 16,000 RPM. with the programming, i think you can make up to 4 (i'm only remembering from reading the instructions when i bought it) different custom advance curves if none of the 5 provided work out. i imagine those 5 will probably be fine unless you're drag racing or road racing with very specific conditions. several people on here know them well-- maybe they'll chime in.

I know this is an old post but recently dealing with a dead pulse generator on my 1979 CB650. Hoping for a little advice from your experience Paulages. Was wiring the new dynatek ingition system pretty simple? Looks slightly different than stock wiring. And with the spark units on the 650 vs on the 550(which is the model applicable for the dynatek, yes?) where it looks like you are wiring directly to the ignition coils.

Paulages has not posted in A LONG TIME.

Dynatek still does not make a turnkey system for the 650.  The only turnkey aftermarket electronic ignition is made by C5 and comes with its own coils.
