Chain removal question
« on: April 02, 2008, 02:45:08 PM »
I did a search and didn't see anything.  Nor did I see anything in the shop manual.  I'm showing my newbie status  :-[ ... do I need to remove the front sprocket to remove the chain or do I need to pop a link?  I have the entire bike stripped down to the frame and engine.  But the chain doesn't want to slide over the front sprocket.  I just want to make sure before I take the sprocket off.
Thanks,
Kev

If you have it down to the frame, you may want to replace the front & rear sprokets and the chain.  In that case, cut the chain OR just take it all off.

When I put mine back on the road I replaced the chain & sprockets for GP.

Thanks for the reply.  What chain and sprockets did you go with?  This bike only has about 14k original miles on it.  After a good soaking the chain and sprocket should still be good.

i recommend renthal sprockets... lighter and supposedly just as strong or stronger than the old and/or current steel ones.
what keeps me coming back is the price though.  and, no... i don't have to go back very often.   ;)

I just go to the Honda dealership & get the chain and sprockets.  I think they had to order them from partsnmore or somewhere...

I don't know about your dealership, but when you order through them, you don't have to pay shipping.

For instance, if I ordered the chain and sprockets through an online company, I would have to pay shipping, but if I order it through the dealership, I don't have to pay shipping.

I get the standard sprockets that heffay mentioned.... I've never got the renthal sprockets.

Thanks guys.  It sounds like I need to remove the front sprocket.  One more question.  How do you unbend the washers that lock the nuts down on the rear sprocket?
Thanks,
Kev

Large flat bladed screwdriver down between the tab washer and the bolt and either lever or lightly tap with a mallet....being careful not to scratch anything of course ;)
