Yet Another Weather Post, Could Be A Long Night!
« on: April 09, 2008, 07:51:10 PM »

We were just doing out usual evening thing. My Wife and my Daughter were in the living room watching TV, James was taking a bath and I was, as usual, checking out here and the Twins forums. All of a sudden, with no warning, the "Tornado Siren" goes off. Quickly, we turned over to a local station and realized that a Severe thunder storm was coming in from Oklahoma and had several rotations moving with it along with Golfball size hail. We don't know ALL of the details yet, but several businesses, Homes and one apartment complex has received damage. The apartment complex lost ALL of the windows, at least! Luckily we only got some rain with some pretty good winds. Thing is, there are said to be 2 more storms building and moving through the same basic area!

Sure hope Oakie and anyone else in Oklahoma, are all okay! Hope those storms loose a lot of there strength before they go too far. I think they are headed toward the central part of the state and that means that they could go through the small town of Perryville (my Dad lives just outside of that town). :-\  Already called my Dad t let him know that we're okay and he knows that they are headed in that direction.

                                       Later on, Bill :) ;)

Well, we made it through the night. :-\  When the 2nd storm came through, we got more rain and wind than with the 1st one and the tornado sirens went off again around 10:30 or 11:00. Then we got a call from a friend in Fort Smith (about 11:30, where most of the activity was going through) and her Subaru SUV lost ALL of the windows and was heavily damaged on the roof and hood. They also had window damage on their house, along  with lots of other houses up there. (Fort Smith is about 12-15 miles away) Plus she said we had some coming at us. My wife was watching the History Channel and turned over to a local station just as the Tornado Sirens went off again, and we found out that there was a big part of the storm heading for us, So to the bathroom we went, with me checking ever so often for outside conditions and keeping up with the situation on TV. The part that went over us had tornado activity that could have dropped down at any time, but fortunately didn't. We only got a lot of rain and winds from it as it past over. By 12:30 things settled down around here. We woke up this morning to find out that there was (and still is) some serious flooding in Fort Smith and a number of roads and businesses closed due to the weather and damage. Schools there are also closed. They had Hail Stones from Golf Ball to even Tennis Ball size last night and early this morning. I haven't heard about whatever damage there might be around here, it's all about Fort Smith for now. I haven't tried to get out and see about around here yet, still raining heavily there and here. We have a drainage ditch that comes down behind us and goes to the road, after it passes our next door neighbor and the house across the street (at that point) has flooded twice before. Hopefully it's not happening now, but I don't know. That family has had to move out before and usually does so in times like this. We've been to the City about it and sandbags have been placed each time to try to keep it down, until things can be corrected. I think God that that Tornado didn't come down here and, as far as I know, nobody was killed during all of this. There was one car that was trying to cross over the freeway on a bridge, hydroplaned, went off the road and nearly plunged down onto the freeway.

Hey bill where do you live?  I am guessing Arkansas but where at exactly.  I am up here in Springfield, MO and it has been raining all night.  Hope to make it down to the Richland area and do some boating this weekend.  We spent saturday just north of Fort Douglas on Hurricane Creek and then stayed the night at Horseshoe canyon.  You arent that guy that ad what looked to be like 4 cb's hanging in a tree are you?  I do not remember where it was exactly but we past a house and it looked like there were 4 of them hanging in a tree.

Anyways glad to here you and your family are ok.

Jay, we are fine, just had a night that could have been pretty bad. As it was, it was just stressful and am thankful for that.
We live in Greenwood, which is about 12 miles South of Fort Smith. We're in the Central Western part of Arkansas and not far from Oklahoma. There were 3 storms that built up and did some pretty good damage in Oklahoma, then came on through into Arkansas. Greenwood just got some wind and rain from the first two and got heavy rain and good amount of wind from the third one along with the possibility of at least one Tornado coming down out of that third one too. According to the weather reports, there was definitely a rotation there and on the verge of coming down as a Tornado. Greenwood hasn't been hit by a Tornado since 1968 or 69', when a big part of town was hit and everything around the Town Square was wiped out. We didn't live here then. Thanks for the concern. ;)

And, no I don't have any Hondas hanging in any trees, fortunately. ;)

Bill, glad to hear everything is OK. You need to move up here. All you have to get use to is 90" of snow in the winter, so bring your shovel. ;)

Bob, don't know if I could handle all that snow, but I could get used to seeing all those Muscle Cars that manage to come out up there when the weather is good though. 8) ;)

You all should move here to Southern NY. We don't get all that stuff.  ;D

Yeah we're okay, thanks for asking. ;)  Kinda used to getting the warnings and all, but this was the closest one since the one in 68' or 69' (don't remember for sure, we weren't here then). Was beginning to think that we were in for some Tornado damage for sure.

Hey Scott, just when do they start forecasting Spring-Type Weather there? Just wondered. I sure don't envy you in that respect.

Hey Bobby, what kind of weather DO you all get? We're doing fine here, but there's a possibility of some more thunderstorms this evening. No indication yet that it will be as bad though.

We get a mix. Winters are fairly mild in this part of the State. It is in the 30's as a rule in the winter. We do get down to the single digits for a couple of days at a time. The storms that you just had will be here tomorrow and they will just be some rain. We can get a lot of snow or rain if the storm comes up the coast from the South. The stuff coming from the West fizzles out by time it gets here. The summer can be hot, but not Dixie hot. It's pretty livable. About 72 today and 60's tomorrow. Don't believe all the crap you hear or read.

Thanks Sam and, yeah Dad's fine too. Thanks for asking. He just got some rain down there, guess it ran out of steam by the time it went that far. Now, Fort Smith (which is about 12-15 miles away) got some damage from the hail (golfball size - tennisball size!), winds and heavy rain. I don't think an actual Tornado was involved, but the winds were pretty bad. Don't know exactly how fast the wind was blowing there, but at Muldrow, Oklahoma, the winds were blowing at 100mph! Needless to say, there was some pretty good damage there too! I called last night to let him know that we were okay and again today to check on him and to let him know that we got through all 3 storms without any trouble here.

                            Take care, Bill ;)

I've heard that saying, but what I heard was, "If you don't like the weather in Arkansas, just wait a few minutes and it'll change."     Wouldn't doubt that there would be a lot of places that that is said. ;)

Glad everyone is ok Bill...I gotta admit our winters suck but I would rather shovel snow once in a while than rebuild every once in a while!!! or worse...

Canadian winters suck and I am really wanting a "REAL" spring to kick in but it could be worse...

Thanks Dennis, I appreciate that. ;) So far, We haven't had to do much of anything because of storms, but you never know. We used to live up on a hill some years back and I had one of those Arrow brand 10' x 10' buildings (that you put together with a gillion little sheet metal screws that have these little plastic like washers on them and the building is made up of a bunch of panels). Well, THAT building got blown over my back fence once. Insurance company came out and said that they could either give me a certain amount and I give them the building or they could give me a lesser amount and keep the building. I kept the building, fixed it back and mounted it on 4 4x4x10' timbers (that I had sunken into the ground). I thought I had the perfect answer. ;D Well, the next storm that came through showed me that I might have had the perfect answer, but it was to another question cause the building went back over that fence again and the bottom pieces were partially pulled loose from the building. I was so mad at the whole thing that I jumped over the fence, kicked that building apart at the corners and tossed all of the pieces back over the fence! >:( I then piled it all up by the side of my garage so I could load it up and haul it off! Before I could get it hauled off, a buddy came over to see me, saw the remains and asked if he could have it! I HELPED him load it up! :D In all seriousness, we have been very fortunate! Like I said earlier in this thread, Greenwood got blown away in 68' (I've got that year straight now) and you just never know when another one might come. No offence to anyone about where they live, but I've lived in Arkansas all my life. I've been to all of the States except New York, Mass, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New Jersey, North & South Dakota, Ohio, Montana, Colorado, Washington, Montana, Iowa and Maine and I have to say that I prefer to live here. I DID like visiting the other states, but as most of us fell, "There's No Place Like Home!" ;)

                                      Take care, Bill ;)

If it helps any, Bill, 90" is not typical. Our year-over-year average in Ann Arbor is 50-55" though this year broke the previous record of 83" that only happened 4 years ago. Hmm, hope this isn't some sort of trend. :-[
