Clean your own carbs and check for worn bits, 50-100 bucks a carb "phewee" do it yourself, it's character building and gives you a great insight into what makes your bike run.
As Scunny said the Custom carbs are CV (constant velocity) and are spaced differently unfortunately cos they really are touchy suckers, you will have to stick with the mechanical carbs for your 79.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Put the pipes on before getting the bike tuned. I don't think it will make any difference as far as timing and such, but for carb syncing it will, especially if you are going from a stock 4-4 to a 4-2 or 4-1.

Thanks for the info, I got some good news today.  I took the engine apart and took it to a local shop that works on these old bikes and had the cylinders and pistons checked.  They are within spec!!!!  Can't believe it.  The slight chatter I heard I was told was coming from my cam chain.  It needs replaced!


Really it suprised you??
I've taken 40k+ mile cb650 motors apart that were WELL within specs.
Good luck on that camchain.... If the motor hasn't been abused then why?
Mabey you just need to adjust the cam chain tensioner to get rid of that noise...
I know all the cb650's I've gotten running(so far) that one thing cured most of the engine noise.

Well....
Back to the topic at hand.........



I have been avoiding my trickle charger since the beginning of riding season(no snow on the ground, warmer than 0 F.).. So about a 3-4 weeks now.
So far so good. Mabey it's the change in riding style(keeping RPM's above 6k when possible), or who knows.....

Checked the battery this morning, and the voltage hasn't decreased since the beginning of the season... it's gone UP!
Only .2 volts....  Mabey a glitch, mabey not.... who cares, it's holding a good charge.

 ;D ;D



Tried a burnout at work today before leaving, and still have to chock the front wheel somehow to keep the rear from just shoving the front tire along. :(
Not saying the front tire is rotating when I do this, it's being shoved forward.
The dual disks are holding the tire well and still.

Even tried having a buddy balance the bike while I literally put all my weight on the bars and tried it...... still lurches forward.(a might scary there... not gonna try again!!)
But get the front tire against a curb, and it's smoke city.



The rev limiter is awesome at night!
Hold her at WOT and it starts shooting flames out the muffler!
I'm guessing from the spark cut-out and cut-in effect the dyna2000 has... igniting the mixture in the exhaust.
Seems the warmer the bike, the longer the flames get.
 :o

MPG is still hovering in the 40's no matter the riding style.
Last tank's MPG was higher than normal though, just a hair(.3 mpg) under 50mpg.
But I was being nice to the throttle to see what it was going to do.
Not that I shifted any lower RPM's, just babied it up to that point instead of going WOT immediately after each shift.



Going to order a set or 2 of lower clubman type bars(euro style?)...
Something along the lines of what is used in the "Gentleman's Express" article.



Now if I could only get the guy I work with to buy those tires for his rims so I can get that fugly KZ1000 outta my garage!!
Ok it's not fugly.... I just want my garage back!!

Thinking subtle changes this year.... mabey some lower rise bars.
Something along the lines the of the bars used in "the gentlemens express" article.
Been kinda surprised I haven't had to "fix" anything lately.



But that gives me a urge to start tinkering on my other cb650.
Good thing I'm keeping that one as cobbled together/left over parts....
no raise, no bonus..... i'm not only screwed... but I technically make less than last year if you take into account the increase of the cost of living.....

Well if the bars in the first pictures are what you still have, I'd say by all means go with shorter bars!

It seems whenever I see a bike from the UK they often have shorter bars as stock. I broke down and bought OEM 400f bars for my 550. I could'a bought no name superbike bars for everyone on the forum for what I paid.  :-[ :D

Last year I used one. Pretty much every weekend I would hook it up, and it would start better the following monday.

But this year(so far) I have not used the trickle charger since riding season has started.
I've been trying to modify my riding style to keep the RPM's up whenever possible.


Tested the battery recently and the battery is holding it's charge well.




Looking forward to getting lower bars though!
And removing that fugly plastic fairing I use in colder weather too!

They are powdercoated with corvell flex black.
Meant as an outdoor coating, chemical acid and abrasion resistant.

Gotta luv perks from work!
Lord knows they give pittance raises.(3% is the HIGH end of the raise scale on a NORMAL year!)
That and free machine time makes up for it I guess.

Soos, one of these days when I'm not busy (yeah, that'll be soon  ::) ) I'm gonna ride down to you and just watch you work on your bike.  I'm a visual learner, so even seeing diagrams in the shop manual doesn't help as much as seeing someone do the stuff in person.

Of course I will bring beer.

I got almost any tool you would need if you want to drop by for a tune up or something.

Although my manometer has had most of the mercury sucked out of it though....
(Still looking for a refill...)

Been hoping to get a member or two for a canyon ride for some time.
Ghost lives pretty close to you as well I believe.

Mabey we all could plan something this year?

That'd be sweet.  I need to do my fork seals like nobody's business.  I need to replace the brake pads but what's the point if your fork is just gonna piss oil all over a new pad?  Next couple of months are booked up on Saturdays because of rugby, and Sundays are full of hangovers due to what goes on Saturday  ;D  Once temps have stabilized a bit, maybe mid-late may we should totally do a canyon ride.

At least it wasn't your child that sucked the mercury out!

WOW....


I'm a sucker for friends and run down bikes I guess....
I have been fixing a buddy's KZ1000 for a while now(problem here, there, everywhere!!)
And he came by yesterday and gave me a set or "good" mirrors.

He is quite the... flashy ride kinda guy, and low and behold, chrome mirrors.
I like the basic black almost everything on my bike is sporting, so the chrome mirrors replacing the black ones was almost too much for me.
But being a gift, I wasn't about to insult him by not at least trying them out.


I AM IMPRESSED!!!
They look like they belong on a chromed out hardley, but they show SO MUCH MORE of the road than the cheapie black ones I was running!!
These chrome ones have a slightly curved(guessing here, they look flat as can be) mirror.
I can read the plate of the vehicle behind me, and still see 2 lanes to each side of me!

I guess I can scratch up the chrome a bit and paint them :)
The chrome has gotta go.

But I am now not going with the lowest cost part anymore when it comes to mirrors.
The black ones I bought were about 15.00, these chrome ones were about 60 at a local shop.
I looked online and found a set on febay for 40 50+ with shipping.

Original chrome Honda mirrors are scarce Soos, I'm getting a set of Chinese knock-offs for my Jaffa's bike as my Honda ones looked good on her Suzi when I rode it.

Aww... FARQ!


Tried getting the replacement rim, and got it today.
It's not the right one...


I didn't know they made a reverse stamped dual disk front rim for the 650.
The dual disk cb650's I've seen had the normal stamped comstars, not the reverse stamped ones.

Anyways the hub width on the one I recieved is 2.750 where the disk seats up against.
The rim it was to replace measures 3.150.
It is a single disk rim stock to my '79cb650 that I stuffed a dual disk setup onto.
OH WELL....
Not mad at anybody but me, since I wasn't specific enough, it is completely my fault.


I ended up going to a bolt supply store for now, and got some 5/16 bolts to replace the stock bolts.
They were soo loose I could spin them with my fingers.

Now removing the nuts was another story...
took 2 - 12mm wrenches 2 people and a screwdriver.
A PITA.


I torqued them down in 5lb increments up to 25lbs.
I also used blue loctite to hold them for now.


After I put it back on i'll report if ti killed the clicking noise coming from the hub and spokes floating.

It shouldn't though
Not a permanent fix, but it will do for now.






Hoping to trade this rim for a single disk reverse stamped comstar of a std cb650....


we will see.

Did you get a set of 650Z discs or 650CL ones?
There was no way my Custom wheels would ahve fitted my old Z model, everything was just sooo much bigger/thicker on the Custom.

pics are better.
But if you look at the "spokes" they are dished IN, and most are dished OUT where the reinforcing ribbing is.

the reverse stamped ones are better looking IMO.




And no I am not running cb650 disks actually.
My setup consists of :

'79 cb650 parts:
tripple trees
fork slider tubes and springs
single disk rim

'79 cb750 DOHC  parts:
lower legs
calipers
disks and mount bolts.
and plastic fender.


It all surprisingly dropped right in, spacing for everything is perfect.






But to more important matters....


My stopgap fix of replacing the bolts, well it works so far.
no creaking, or feeling like I am riding on cobblestones at 5mph or less.

Just took a ride through neighborhoods out to the lake and back.
Lots of stop signs, and I really pushed the braking to the limit of almost slipping to see if they were going to work loose or anything.

Just checked them(with a wrench) and they are all tight still so far.

I'm still banking on getting a rim that will work.
Actually I could use the '79 DOHC normal comstar rim, but I really don't want to mis match my bike THAT much.
It is spaced right for the center hub width.




If nothing else bills boneyard in SLC had tons of rims, literally, TONS.
And I know he currently has 2 '79/80 cb650 motors.
He more than likely has the front rims as well.

Hopefully I can work something out with the cb650 though.

that's! why I don't Like my rims, Knew there was something about em that made them look cheap like they were stamped then painted with no finishing work done, I agree think they would look alot better reversed,

I have pics of the hub differences.

The first 2 pics are an identical hub to what I need, on a cb750 DOHC rim ('79)
The second 2 pics are the front and back of the rim from the trade.
