Tank Emblem from an Accord
« on: April 14, 2008, 03:55:02 PM »
I don't know if anyone has tried this (couldn't find "Tank Emblem Accord" when I searched).  I have two trunk emblems from an early 90's Accord ('90 thru '93 to be precise) which look like they might make decent tank emblems!

They are about 5.5 inches long, 3/4 inches high and have a "peal and stick" backing.  Two small nubs, which I assume are intended to align the emblem on an Accord's deck lid, look like they could be Dremmel'd off easy enough.

I would imagine surface prep will be the key to get them to stick and stay.  I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone might have, positive or negative, on the likelihood that these will work on freshly painted tanks or side covers.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Can't see any reason that they wouldn't work.  Honda car emblems are probably a dime a dozen on Ebay.  I personally prefer the shaved & smooth look but to each his own.

One problem I could see is the likelihood of spilling gas on the adhesive at some point in the future.  Will the gas dissolve it?  If you do stick them on, you should probably wait until the clear coat is fully cured.

The tank emblems are curved to fit the tank.  Can you bend those for curvature and not get striations in the shiny finish?

Cheers,

They do have a bit of flex, so I think they will lay down smoothly, following the curvature of the tank side.

Good point about stilt fuel taking out the adhesive.

What a great idea. I have sitting next to me my old ACURA emblem that came undone from my trunk lid. About the same size but shorter. It has a slight curvature. Why not an Acura CB750F. The luxury Honda division of motorcycles?!  ;)
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

The adhesive that i son the back of those emblems is some tenacious stuff just make sure the area you are sticking them to is free of excessive dust and grease.
Before sticking them on I would get them good and warm so they are a little more flexible before applying them, A good way to heat them up without melting
is to get good sized pot of water to a near boil, stuff the emblems in a heavy duty zip lock bag and dunk them for a short bit, keeping all things plastic from the pots edges.
I farted and made my son cry.

I would suggest you remove all the adhesive and stick the emblems on with silcon. I did that with some BSA badges onto a gas tank and it worked very well. Its not affected by gas and when/if you need to take them off they can be peeled off without damaging the paint below.

First of all, I think that chromed tank badges are probably the best option when it comes to tank decoration. Just look at Triumphs. I hate those cheap, decal decoration. It's the icing on the cake.

Now to the point. I didn't care to look or pay for the tank trim on my CB350, so I just bought automotive tank trim and put it right away. I think it looks great. It's adhesive, and as somebody has pointed out, it's tenacious. Nevertheless, even when the trim is flexible, it tends to peel off at the point with the curve is tightest, at the front of the tank, in one of the extremes. It won't peel off in the middle of the trim.

If I were you I would be concerned about two things: if the badge would tend to unstick with time, or if the adhesive will take the clearcoat with it. I had the finish of my helmet tearing off when removing an adheshive; I wouldn't want that on my tank. I would pre-shape the badge first, and probably, use just the ends of the adhesive strip, you don't need to use the full lenght.

If you need to remove it, do what I did with my car badges: dental floss and then clean the mess with your fingernails and alcohol. The clearcoat will dull with the alcohol, so be gentle and stop to let it dry and see what's going on. Luckily, a little polish will bring the brightness to the clearcoat again.

Take a queue from Honda themselves.  Most, if not all, of the newer Honda motorcycle tank emblems are held on by none other that 3M trim adhesive.  My 1800 VTX most definitely had the tank and side cover emblems held on by the 3M tape until I took them off.  Gas will not release it.  You can remove it as stated with dental floss, using a sawing motion and clean up the paint with a product called Goo Gone.  Works great.

That's true, BUT the badge is pre-shaped to fit the tank contour.

Use a heat gun to remove badges.  MUCH easier.
