77 550k rebuild
« on: April 21, 2008, 07:04:15 PM »
Here's how it looked last August:

Started tearing the motor down over winter break to replace the head gasket:

Did a poor man's port and polish, lapped valves, did a lot of painting and polishing.

Going back together this last weekend:

After some more work this weekend it should be ready to go for the summer  ;D

Thanks again for the pipes Ryan, they look great!

So I've gotta ask - how the hell did you get the engine so clean?

First I disassembled the top end and soaked it in the sink filled with hot water and "simple green" for a few hours. For the combustion chambers and ports I used oven cleaner and a brass brush; then I used the dremel tool with the scotch brite wheels. For the mating surfaces I scraped off the old gaskets with a razor blade, then cleaned the surface with simple  green, scotch brite pads, brass wool and wiped them down with naptha. For the fins I used simple green and scotch brite pads. And a lot of patience and determination.
