Can a forced backfore damage the exhaust?
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:06:33 AM »
I have recently(to many a dogs lament) gotten down making my bike backfire.

Can I damage my exhaust from doing this? My Exhaust is a 4-1 on a '79cb650.

Apart from possibly blowing the canister off the collector, has anyone ever seen a collector or  canister split along the seam from doing this?

Shouldn't have you asked this BEFORE doing the backfire?  ;D

I don't think it is really likely unless you do it all the time for quite a while.  My CB450 has 2-1 exhaust that is pretty open and it backfires all the time on hard decel.  It is normally pretty light poping and cracking, however, sometimes I decel and hit the kill switch at the same time to load up the pipes with raw gas fumes then click the kill switch back on while still deceleration, and boom, like a shot gun.  Never hurt anything though.

But you can only do it so many times before you will explode the pipe apart.  If it is a new pipe, it will take it a lot longer.

But it is a lot of fun!!!   It sounds like a cannon if done in a tunnel.

I blew two new mufflers apart on a Dodge pickup doing that.

Its just a test to see if its rusted out. If it splits open, you needed a new one anyway  ;D

It can do damage, but is less likely to damage a loud muffler than it is a nice quiet stock type.
If they're the straight through glass pack type, they'll likely never be hurt by it other than maybe needing recking sooner.  baffle types, especially restrictive stock types are slower to release pressure so it builds internally faster than they can release it and damage can occure quicker.

Once had a willys jeep, old 1946 flathead cj-2a.
When I bought it I could get it to fire up but it would only rev to maybe 1500-2000 rpm, played with it a while, checked plugs cap/rotor exhaust etc. Finally sitting there at my friends house he said just hold it down and I'll play with timeing etc. so I fired it up, put the pedal on the floor, two seconds later heard a BOOM! and a smash of glass. Looked back and saw that the back plate of the muffler and a foot or two of tail pipe had gone through his window and into the TV dropping big chunks of mouse nests and a couple dead mice along the way.
