1978 CB400a Hondamatic: Opinions on these please
« on: April 27, 2008, 03:20:24 pm »
My girlfriend's been in the market for a bike for awhile now.  She is a new rider.  I have seen several 1978 cb400a automatic bikes in my area.  Does anyone have any experience with these?  Do the automatics carry problems that the standard manual bikes don't?   Is there anything with these bikes that I should look out for?

Opinions please.

I can not comment on the automatic issue, but I have restored a 1980 CM400E and 1981 CM400 Custom and they are very reliable bikes.  Also good for people with short legs.  I think it would be a good starter bike for her as long as the carbs and tank are clean and it was properly maintained over the years.  Not sure what year they went to electronic ignition as both of mine do not have points.  Those automatics are not very desirable as most people like to shift.  So try to buy low as you will probably have to sell it low price too.
