broken clutch cable or something else? cb350G
« on: April 29, 2008, 08:39:28 AM »
yesterday i changed the clutch perch on my bike to one with out any controls on it.  when i tries to press the clutch it was real tight then i heard a pop.  now the cable is real loose.  the peice that goes into the side cover is loose and when you press the clutch now you can see the cable moving so i was thinking that the cable might not be broken.  i havent opened the cover because two screws are stripped out from the P.O.  is it possible that something else broke inside there?  and also when i take that cover off is there any oil in it?  here are some pics..

so i finally got the cover off to see whats inside.  i really have no idea what im looking at.  any help would be great.  when i push the clutch lever it comes out fine but wont retract.  the spring seems to be fine.  also when i opened the cover this small peice fell out.  it looks like it was cracked off something but i cant find another peice in there...  here are some pics.

I think that little piece is 1/2 of one of the little alignment widgets used to align the bolt holes.

You should be able to pull the other 1/2 out of the motor or case and just replace it.  That is not your problem though.

I would look towards pulling it apart a bit more and cleaning out and re-greasing all the movable parts on the case side, perhaps it is binding there.

Good luck.

There should be a little steel ball bearing inside the clutch adjuster mechanism - it pushes on the rod that comes through the engine just forward of the counter sprocket there.
If that steel ball is missing, your clutch won't work right.

Without the rear tire moving, it will be very difficult to change to all the gears.

Glad you got it figured.
Now clean it all and lube it so you don't have to go back in there for a while ;D

yeah thanks.  it seemed like it wasnt a problem in there but more of the cables position under the tank. :-\  i didnt realize how much of an effect that had on everything...
