Problems starting a Yamaha XV550 Vision
« on: April 30, 2008, 08:48:07 AM »
My neighbour has acquired a non-running XV550, according to the previous owner it had been running OK but then stopped dead whilst he was sat at some traffic lights and never run again.

My neighbour managed to get it running last year until again it just stopped dead. With the recent bout of decent weather he decided to give it another go, he removed the front cylinder head (apparently the PO had removed this previously, possibly the root of the current problem) to check the condition of the valves, the bore and the piston, all were OK.
The engine has now been re-timed in accordance with the manual instructions, the triggers in the alternator housing have been checked, fuel flows through the carbs OK and the coils are giving a good spark, but the motor wont start, we're getting some good spitbacks out of the carbs, and a couple of almighty bangs from the pipes, but no running.

We've tried alternative trigger assemblies, an alternative ignition 'black box', and even swapping the coils over, but nothing will tempt the thing into life,  Is there a way of adjusting the ignition timing on these things that the manual doesn't tell of?

Is there something else that we could have missed?
