Maiden voyage last night, have some questions
« on: May 14, 2008, 06:35:13 AM »
Well, as the title says, I took my 77 750K on its maiden voyage last night.  What a fun bike!  I can tell I'm really going to like it.  I do have a few questions though.  For informations sake, it has a MAC 4-1 and pods, stock pilot jetting, and 122.5 mainjet.

When driving it at night, I notice that the lights get bright, then dim, every 30 seconds or so, like its going from generator+battery to just battery every so often.  Like I said, it seems to do this every 30 seconds or so, and it doesnt seem to affect how the bike runs at all, oddly.  Would this be a regulator issue?

Secondly, its pretty stumbly in the 1/4-ish throttle range, and seems to have some hiccups further than that, although I really didnt push it last night.  I am assuming this would be pilot jet range, and into jet needle range?  I know there isnt anything I can do about the pilot on a 77, except make sure its clean, which it is.  Should I raise the needle up a notch (are there notches or shims?), or what?  I am already running 122.5 mains.

Other than that, its doing good, and, like a typical Honda, it works almost flawlessly, despite being 32 years old.

I can tell I'm really going to love this bike!!

Don't start making changes until you know what's happening.  Do a plug chop at the throttle opening that you're having the problems to see what's actually going on.

Anyone have any theories on the regulator issue?

Not until you whip out your voltmeter and give us some test data to work with  :)

What's the battery voltage when not running, idling, and at 3000 RPM?  Describe your electrical system and ignition, if not stock.

Congrats on the first of your shakedown runs :)

regulator contacts need cleaning and re-setting as per Honda manual
