Career Ender ?
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:18:52 AM »
Back in the early 90's when I was still
working for the Eastman Kodak Company and I
was brilliant
and was still drinking-
I was at a Kodak function at a hotel in downtown Indianapolis
the night before the 2nd ever Nascar race at that venerable track.
In the company of several Company bigwigs as well as Sterling Marlin
(driver of the Kodak car), I shared the fact that the current (July '94) speeds being run by Nascar  at Indy
(around 165 mph lap averages) had been reached by the true Indy cars
in 1963.
In the following months I felt my career path nose over.

what's that old saying,

"don't let your mouth overload your butt"  ;D ;D

Hey, nascar folks don't want to know how sorry they are.

In a recent discussion of Rossi going to f1 there was this stated,
Rossi will probably go to Rally driving which is what his dad did after his motorcycle career.

"It likely does take more talent to be a rally driver but the prestige is
certainly in F1.  Kind of like it takes more talent to, say, fish than it does
to drive NASCAR but competitive fishers just don't get the same level of respect."

The name is with held to protect the career. ;D ;D ;D

In college I had a prof. who was an ex VP of marketing for Coca-Cola as well as for some other big companies. He retired, got bored and decided to teach a few classes.

He gave a few examples of "events" like that which usually happened at spirited office parties; usually involving liquid courage.

Thing is, he said was that the employee who said it was usually the smartest person in the room; saying what everyone else was thinking.

He said smart companies like Coca-Cola will now use such parties to get "the real dirt" on what the employees think about the companies, by enlisting people to mingle among the crowd and report back to management. He says it's a great way to give real info to management who are often removed from reality. Sadly, back in the day you just got canned as an example that you don't dare speak the truth to management.

All true, but whom amongs us has NOT tasted shoe leather? ::)

The only job I ever got fired from was when I was having an job evaluation(spelling) for a pay raise with my former boss. He said something I didn't like and I informed him that I had fired better people than him for less when I was in his position.

It was not hard to have a career nose over in the 1990's, the game turned mean. The Winston Cup cars were not as slow as you think. Bill Elliot turned a 212 mph lap at Talledaga in 1987. They then put the restrictor plates on the cars to slow them down on super speedways for spectator safety. Considering how crude they are compared to the F1 cars that is a pretty good speed.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

i'd think your overlords wouldnt have given a damn about that fact. In fact, they might have been pleased since slower cars make it easier to see the sponsor logos.

I live in the heart of Nascar country and honestly the racing just doesnt appeal to the tech junkie within me.

I'm currently mourning the loss of true superbike racing in this country.
