I  love the way your bike has come along and really dig the fab work on teh rear end and those gsxr forks.  Just my opinion but I would go with black for the frame as well, but thats just me. Also (not sure how you did it) but I always take a sample of the color I want with me so whoever is doing my paint work knows exactly what I want. But anyway great job and as always keep us posted!

Ok, so the frame is going back in for a coat of black.
On that note, I need to add a little more gold/bronze color to the tank and seat combo.  Can anyone suggests a paint pattern, or show a good example of a bike that has one along the lines of the attached photos?  What I am really looking for is a thin (1/2") stripe around the front part of the tank (like the greed bike below), while on the seat, do the same thing on both sides of the seat like numberplates; however, have the stripe thicken a little towards the back curve and tailight area like the ducati.  Does this make sense?  If anyone thinks they know what I am refering to and you have pics, please do share.

This may be a really dumb question, but where would I go buy shims to install for the top bearing on the forks?  I'm guessing like a machine shop or something like that, but I could be completely wrong. Thanks for the help!

You no longer need to. All Ball Racing has provided some very helpful assistance in combining two bearings to fit our old CB’s.

Here are the part numbers:

99-3506/33-1006 (30-48-15)
99-3511/33-1006 (26-48.5-15)

The bearing section from the 99-3506 is used with the race of 99-3511 achieving an assembly of (30-48.5-15).
This is the current bearing setup that I’m using and the fit is perfect.
You end up with a 48.5mm race that fits the head tube and a 30mm ID that fits the modern steer tube.

Well, the saga continues...
As for the frame, I had returned it to the coater to do a coat of black, and he finally called me back today to say that it was done.  I pick up the frame on my lunch break so i was in a hurry.  I get back to work and see an odd glare coming from the back of the frame,  the sun was shining on it at the right angle and upon closer look, the back hoop of my frame is now caved in with a golfball size dent. It appears that it was dropped on its tail from about 4ft up.  I swear... it is always something.
I have yet to give the guy a call back, but I have a feeling that this may be another troublesome situation.  Any reccomendations on how to go about it.  From the looks of it, the frame will most likey have to have the section cut out and a new one rewelded in.

I can't believe it! Why are some people such a$$es?
You know he had to know the frame was dropped and damaged.
Does it look like he dropped it prior to or after the black powder.
I had a lot of problems with my Buell project, and your issues remind me of that very frustrating time.
I feel your pain Squirley, but you have to stick with it, you’re almost done.

Good luck
Jimmy

The frame was dropped prior to powder coating as I don't see any dulled paint around the area.  It probably happened when they were hanging it for powder, and it fell.  I know that it happened there as it wasnt there after the first powder coat session, and it wasnt there when I brought it into him the second time as we went over the frame so I could show him spots that I wanted extra care taken to.
I tell ya what, it seems like everything is going wrong with this damn frame, it's the only thing holding me back now...and I am not evey a picky guy...

Who knows, maybe his country bumpkin 15 year old helper dropped it?  I did something like that when I worked at a body shop one time, except I was 20 and the car was a BMW 850i!!  I'd like to think not after the whole $500 different color powdercoat shenanigans.
Either way, I know what I'd be thinking: douche.

Well, returned the frame today and was pleasantly surprised with the customer support.  He simply said "if your not happy than I'm not happy," and took the frame no questions asked.  I guess he probably felt obligated to do anything I asked after all the crap that has gone down.  Should have it back in two days.

Squirley, it is indeed a great looking bike, your fabrication skills are really amazing.
By some weird coincidence I have started to build my 1971 CB500 with exact same front end as you, and then I got lucky and found your post. Thanks a lot for all the info, it will be of great use.
I do have a question though, did you have to do anything with the clearence between the front rotors and the spokes?
I remember that FunJimmy had to mill the caliper for his project.
Would it be to much to ask for a good size picture of the front hub and caliper/rotor section?
Thank you, and you can be proud, it is a great build!

Raymond, I can surely take a some close up pics for you of the front caliper rotor section.  (If you don't see them in a few days, don't waste anytime to ask again as sometimes I forget).
There are no clearance issues between the spokes and calipers; although it is a tight fit...the pictures will tell all?
Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Jens

Squirley

What's up! Did you finally get the frame back in it's repaired and repainted state?

You've gotta start posting more progress photos.

Ok, sorry it took so long to get the pics of the front hub and discs, but here they are.  It is hard to tell from the pics, but there is roughly .25" of clearance between the inner caliper and spokes on the left side when facing the bike, and roughly 3/16" clearance on the right side. The hub is not machined down in any way, the gsxr rotors are attached directly to it, and what you see is what you get.  The left side rotor resides roughly in the middle of the caliper.  However, the right side is offset very minimally to the right side of the caliper and rubs the discs a little.  I didn't find this out until I put it back together for the final time.  However, to cure the problem, I will mill down about 1/16" to 1/8" off the inside of the caliper where it mounts to the fork leg.  I am sure that I could just take a file to the caliper mounts and take them down enough in just a couple minutes.  All in all, it is a very simple swap: the steer tube works just fine with the bearings that were mentioned previously in the thread.  Here are some pics to show; can't see much, but if you look hard you will get the idea.

On the lines of progress, engine is back in the frame, and everthing is wired. It took a little while to get the frame back from powder coat, and I had to fix the frame myself...at least I know it was done right.  As of now, I just need to torque some bolts and finish some misc. and it should be ready to go.  Attached are some teaser pics. I still need to paint the exhaust, but it is amazing how dirty the bike looks in the pics...kinda sad really as in life it looks very clean...oh well.

Squirely

It’s no surprise that you had to repair the frame yourself. Probably better that way too. Your know the saying…if you want it done right do it yourself. Glad you’re finally past that stage. Must have been heII!

The teaser pictures look great. Lets see some full frontal shots.  ;D

Those brakes are massive.
Be careful, you don’t want to bend your frame with all that force.

Cheers

I just bought a new bike (05 ZX-10r) and I've been side tracked. I've made no progress lately. I'm jealous. Can't wait to ride with you. Guess I should get crackin'!
