My wife belongs to a women's motorcycle club and I joined as a support member. At one of the meetings as we were going around the table introducing ourselves to a new member, one of the other support members (who just bought a new Honda VTX) happily said, "And now I no longer have the smallest bike in the group!" as I now had the smallest displacement (750) motorcycle among the male group members.

My response? When it was my turn I just said, "I ride a Honda CB 750, and while the smallest bike in the group, I don't feel a need to compensate for anything..." Fortunately he took the joke in stride, despite a room full of laughing women...

LOL!  He had to take it with stride, anything less would have confirmed compensating.

i've ridden everything from 50cc scoots to literbikes.

Personally, I would feel most comfortable on anything 250cc or greater, when it comes to travelling on the interstate. Here in the U.S., such travel is a must if you want to get anywhere.

My friend has a 107? Ci Big Dog and that thing is certainly quick. It would pull away from my CBR600rr at lights pretty well up until 2nd gear. Thing is I could out corner it on my 160cc Vespa.
Big is great if you need to show everyone just how much money, big of a man, how cool you are etc.
A big loud chopper to go with the tribal armband and the lifted Diesel pickup that will never see off road unless you back over the landscaping on your way out of the drive. Wankers need big I guess I'm trying to say I think.

Sorry for bringing up a several months-old thread, but I've got a similar question and figured it dovetailed nicely in here...

I'm 5'8", 150lbs, looking for my first bike. I go to school in Blacksburg, VA - so I've got some hilly terrain around me. There's a CB175 for sale locally that's in really nice shape, can easily afford it, problem is I don't think a 175 is going to quite cut it for the 300 mile round trip I'll be making every couple months or so, or whether it would instill a lot of confidence going up hilly roads into WV or on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Any 175 owners have a comment about that?

I'm also looking at a 550F, but that'll make me broke and does need some work to get it where I'd want it.

Ditto on that.  My first bike was a 185 Suzuki.  I could take it to highway speed but it sure felt like I was KILLING it.  Likely was!

In your situation I would not go under a 350. I'm about your size and had a 68 CB350 as my first bike. Rode the crap out of it and it would do 100mph. Great starter bike for me. Inexpensive and indestructive.

How big a motor is needed to get your butt down the road??

Was at a bike show today, someone told me about a dual carb 124 ci there.. turns out I know the guy and worked on his brake bracket a week ago..

Had not seen him in a while and we never got to talking about his motor.. so I did not know he had gone that big..

 Now i know there are 156 ci out there and maybe bigger , but how much do you need??

Working it out in my head comes out to about 2000 cc or a bit more.. geez and I am thinking if I go to half of that it should be enough...

 Manm they sure make em huge these days.. remember when 1000cc was huge...lol..

         754, I remember when I thought 650cc was big, then it went to 700, 750 and so on (talking Vertical twins, and fours later on). 
And back in the beginning of MY time, a 250 single was a pretty good size bike. Never forget when the CB750 came out and I saw my first one, I was AWED by the sight of THAT one.

             Yeah, the good old 350 would be a good choice, like Jerry said. Don't think I'd go smaller either, not for what you are gonna do with it.

300 mile round trip once every few months, on a CB175. Piece of cake. I used to tour that distance on my '72, no problem. 55-60mph cruising, no problem. Size is not everything. I've just put 600km under the wheels of my 250 over the last three days. No problem.

Im a larger rider yet i still find myself content with nothing larger then a 750...Infact as you can see from my sig that is the largest i have all the rest go well below that level. And i will more then likely agree with Dennis once i get my F3...However there is one bike i do want to own sometime in my life and its still a somewhat conservitive bike at 1100 cc...That of course is the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird.
