picked up an almost complete 400F for $200
« on: May 19, 2008, 09:45:07 PM »
Just picked up a 76 400f from a guy living near me. Took me a serious amount of phone tagging and probably over twenty calls to the guy, but paid in cash and now have a decent 400f with a title. Probably will not attempt any sort of restoration, more of a parts bike, but I'll be taking a better look at it tomorrow. What I do know right now is the headlight is gone as well as the wiring harness, completely cut out. Stock exhaust is there and has a tiny amount of surface rust, which is the main reason I bought the bike since my 77 400f has a kerker exhaust. Engine is clean though, wheels look good with nice tread. Tank was painted grey with who knows what. They were only able to dig out one side cover. I might email them  and offer them $20 for the other one if they can find it just so I have the set.

Just wanted to brag a little since deals like this are harder and harder to find, especially in washington state. When I picked it up, they said he had close to forty calls, which was probably an exaggeration, but I'm sure he had a fair amount of calls, even if 20 of them were from me. I'm pretty excited about the find and whether it's a parts bike or a future running bike, well worth the money...

 Pics tomorrow...

Good for you, I had called on it today, I'm glad that you got it! Let me know if you need any help with it... ;)

Well, I almost had a breakdown trying to get the damn thing. I was in the town where it was listed, 30 minutes after it was listed and called ten times that night, no answer. So I gave up on it, next morning at 8am, kid calls me and asks if I'm still interested. Of course I am, can I come right now and he says he gets out of school at 2:30. So He actually calls back at 2:30 and asks if I want some pictures, no kid, I know what the bike looks like and you're giving it away, I want to come get it now before you wake up and decide to sell it for $500. Says he will call back in ten minutes when he gets home. Well, four hours later he calls back and his dad is up from sleeping off a graveyard shift, so I can talk to him. I dunno, complete run around.

But, I almost paid $2500 last week for a nice 75 550, almost went into debt for that one.

Peter, I'll let you know, like I said, will most likely be a donor bike, at least on those headers, which is what I've been keeping an eye out for since I have kerker headers on my bike. Hoping to go through it today and see if there is a chance of salvaging it, but probably should concentrate on my running 400f and then worry about this one, heh. If it becomes a donor, you'll be the first to know. :)

Alright, bike is in it's new home, a small shed where I will decide where this bike is headed. I have the 77 400F that is in need of a stock exhaust(kerker currently). So what I'm thinking I might do is pull these carbs, rebuild them, pull the exhaust and try to get them as close as I can back to original finish(surface rust as of now) and then move everything from the 77 to this bike and possibly try to get two running 400F's. Here are some pictures. Pretty rough shape, especially electrical wise. Notice in the last pic, a light switch. No idea what's going on, but will be tracking down a wiring diagram and start to go through that as well as I can. Not going to go for looks, but enough to do a compression test at some point and see if this engine is ready for another chance at life. If not, it might be turned into a donor bike with many of the parts likely going to members here. Feel free to comment or shoot some advice my way!

If you do end up turning it into a donor and if they're available, I'd happily take the Speedo and Tachometer assemblies off your hands ;D
