The tank decal idea isn't going so hot (solved!)...
« on: May 22, 2008, 04:18:32 PM »
So I got an email from the graphics cutters today (2 weeks after I sent them the finished design) telling me this:

Quote
Hi Dan,

We are having a heck of a time creating a cut line on the decal.  We are going to try one more time but we might not be able to do this for you.  Something to do with the image itself, cannot explain it.

Thank you

Christopher Eddy

So I replied with this:

Quote
Well that is somewhat disappointing...

Is there anything I can do to help out?  Clean up the lines or create it in a different file format or anything like that?

Thanks again,

 - Dan Humberd

They shot me back an email 10 minutes later:

Quote
Hi Dan,

Yeah, I wasn’t happy about that either.  We love doing customs.  If you can create a cut line(just a separate line) that is one separate piece going around the whole image(that will actually be where it is cut).  We are  having a problem with some lines intersecting that would cause it to cut through some of the image.  The designer has been having a hard time, I am going to give it a try myself later , we are cutting a bunch of orders on that machine tomorrow and would like to be able to squeeze this order in with it.

Thank you

Christopher Eddy

Any graphics designers out there know what I should do to fix this situation?  I don't really want to have to put a boxed border around the image...  Is this image something they SHOULD be able to work with (as in, can I take the image to another decal printer and they will be able to work with it??)

Here's the file if you want to look at it (it's in .eps format, ~2.2 megs)

What the heck is that link?!  I had to save it but then my computer says I can't open it unless I know where it came from.
What does THAT mean?

Can you put it on a pdf or jpeg, or provide a Photbucket link or something?

It's an .eps file, UE.  It's vector art created in Adobe Illustrator.  If I converted it to a .jpg it would become rasterized (resolution dependent) and wouldn't be a true scalable vector art file (which is resolution independent).

But I'll add the decal image just for people to see what it looks like...  Click the picture to see the full size image.

G`day Dan
If your graphics folks are having problems theres got to be something wrong.
I dont know what sort of graphics you are getting done but if i was to do them in vinyl i`d go with two seperate layers, one in black and another in gold.
These are just quick ones to show what i mean, and could be converted to a vector format easily enough.

Cheers

I don't know what all those words are you used, but i can see why that would be a >ah-OO-ga< to cut.   IF they could do it, it would be VERY dificult to apply, too.  I had a similar problem with a stained glass window- how to design a certain piece so that it would follow the flow of the design but still be able to cut it so it wouldn't break
You may have to have the lettering printed on clear that "flows" more-that's easier to cut?

There's a guy here in town that does all my striping.  He could paint it.

I have always been astounded at the quality of his work, which is done by hand.  Between you and me- I always give him more money than he askes because I don't think he charges enough.

Lemme know if you haven't got the file straight yet.  If not, I'll forward the eps to my gf and she'll probably be able to fix it.

Do you still need this?  If so, let me know and I'll get it to you.  I think I can knock out what they're asking for in just a minute or two.
