New Simple Green product
« on: May 25, 2008, 09:09:09 AM »
I didn't want my first post to be a plug, but I think you guys might appreciate this. While looking for something to clean my bucket of rust at the local home improvement store, I came across Simple Green Precision Parts Degreaser. I've used SG before for welding prep and cleaning, but I've heard the drawbacks of using it on aluminum or on carbs.

This stuff is supposed to be safe on aluminum and other alloys and not leave a residue. Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with it. Cleaned my crankcase covers with it and some 000 steel wool and they look pretty good. No residue, but certainly strips paint much better than regular SG.

I'll try cleaning my carbs with it today (hopefully) and see it handles that.

Found out today we can buy this in NZ, warning on label says don't let it dry before removing so must be fairly potent stuff.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

To be honest, I accidentally left it on some random wrenches I was cleaning. Didn't seem to harm them any, but I definitely raced to the garage to clean them when I remembered. Potent may not be the best word for it, though. Took off stuff Acetone left behind.

it affects aluminum more than steel. i left my carb bowls soaking in the stuff for a week, pulled them out, and let them dry (mistake). it left a white residue, kinda like frost, on the bowls. it wipes right off, so not too big of a worry
