Bobby, I checked out some of those top hits in NYC and man oh man do those bring back some memories. There were some I don't remember hearing, but I feel like that if I heard them performed, (at least) some of them might register. Thanks for posting that. My main radio Station for years (in Little Rock) was KAAY, then Mighty 1090, 50,000 Watts. 2 of the DJs I remember the best were "Doc Holiday" and "Rob Robbins" (theme song was "Rockin' Robin"). A bit later on the scene was George J. Jennings. When I was in the Air Force, stationed at Charleston AFB, SC, I was out around midnight messing around in my 58' Chevy and the local station signed off at midnight. I started searching the dial for another one and was amazed when I picked up KAAY from Little Rock (on a skip, I'm sure). Gotta keep rockin' to the oldies! ;)
Funny you should mention that. Even though NY was the major market, they would stop playing Rock & Roll music on Sunday at like 9 PM. We would tune to WKBW out of Buffalo NY or another station out of Ft Wyane Indiana. The two big DJs of the time here in NY were Cousin Brucie and Dan Ingram.
Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

That's cool Bobby! 8) When I was still home in Little Rock, late at night, I'd turn over and find WLS (don't know what the other letter was, maybe KWLS?) in Chicago. And there was Keli (I think), was that in Oklahoma City or Tulsa? I've asked this before and got an answer, but I forgot. :-[  ::)

Okay, for you GHOF's from pre-1960 - this site goes back ten more years and lists the top 100 for each year.

http://www.tropicalglen.com/

Pick a year, and they list about 10 songs as starting points.  Then, just kick back and remember (if you still can).

You know, I hate to hear that Bo Diddley has passed on, but if he hadn't I don't know that we'd have been made aware of the links that let us go back as far as 1960 and as far back as 1950 to look back at those good old hits of those times. That is really cool stuff. It really brought back some memories, seeing the titles of those old songs  and the artists that did them. 8) ;)

Thanks again to Bobby & Firecracker. ;)

It is not unusual that we listen to the music that we grew up with. In a very real sense it is the soundtrack of our lives. You can probably attach a song to a person or a place. It may be a good memory or bad, but that song fit the situation.

I don't live in the past, I like some of the new stuff including some Hip Hop. However, Eminem was not even born when me and Nancy got busy in the back of my 59 Chevy.

Just keep rockin on!!!

Different strokes for different folks, huh. ;) My self, I can't go with the new stuff, but that's just me. Back in the mid 60's, when (what I call the) physcodelic (or however you spell it) music came out, I started going to Country Western more (Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Lynn Anderson, Loretta Lynn and such as that. ;)

Sorry, I looked into it and couldn't find radio info for you.  I did find video of music from your era though...

I am sorry he has passed away. My band played gigs with many Oldies acts including Bo Diddley, Little Richard, The Five Satins, Drifters, Crests, Lou Christie and Chuck Berry. I am sorry to disagree, he was not that much of an innovator. What he was is a mean srpirted, bitter, and jealous man. This was back in the early 70's so I cannot say old he would have been in his early 40's. Sorry this is my personal opinion is based on our interaction and how he conducted himself toward other Artists. Nobody liked the guy when he was alive which is why he did not get a lot of work.

Backing Bo, Little Richard and Chuck Berry sounds like a lot of hard work for 3 chords and $100. Even so, it's impressive you got to do so. I will always remember how moved I was listening to Bo with Matt Murphy doing Who Do You Love. I'm glad I didn't know that he was a hassle to deal with.

When you are a broke 19 year old College student a $100 was fairly important important money. Gas was about 35 cents a gallon and a six pack of beer was $1.25.
It was also fun sitting around listening to the stories and jokes. Music draws chicks which is also important when you are young and free. I guess the driving between gigs and sleeping in the car was a drag, but who cared. For a few moments a night you were someone. Enjoy the music and if it moved you that is great. Obviously there was something inside him that could connect with you through music. He was a musician and by your account he did his job very well.
I knew Richard Thompson from the UK for a brief period of time. His music is sometimes dark and painful. In person, he is a funny and lighthearted human being.

Hey Bobby,

I'll look forward to speaking with you if you make it up for one of the Boston area get togethers.
I did a fair amount of gigging from about 1970 until recently. I loved the traveling part as well, although now that I think about it, sometimes I didn't!

Funny you should say that. I will be spending a great deal of time in Boston. I will be up there  June 16  thru the 19 and 3 weeks in July.
