I dropped an o ring in my case, am I screwed?
« on: June 06, 2008, 10:22:59 PM »
I was getting ready to clean the gasket surface of my engine case on my '77 550, and was taking out that last o ring outboard of cylinder 4 when it flipped up landed perfectly in the gap between the piston (which was down) and the case.  It landed so I could just barely see it w/ headlight, and while trying to fish it out, I lost the bit of quarter inch bit tape I had on the end of my screwdriver as well.
What should I do?  I'd like to think it'll just burn up and I can just clean the sump and filter after a bit.  I tried rotating the crank a half revolution to see if it hung on the rod, but no luck.
Just call me Timmaaaaay!!!

Ya might pull the pan without flipping it over and see if it made it to the bottom......

Might be able to see it in the case if its not in the pan.......

Oil pump screen probably won't let it go thru the engine....but its tough thinking about it in there isn't it?

I dropped a circlip same way when doing my T350 and being a two stroke I just let a piece of soft clean cloth run around the bigend, the oil left in the bigend was just enough to stick the clip to the cloth on the second rotation, then I just did the magicians trick of pulling the cloth carefully out as I rotated the crank.
Not sure if it will work on a 550?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
