1977 kz1000 what is it worth on open market
« on: June 11, 2008, 04:47:59 AM »
22,000 miles mint condition in the same family for its whole life....wondering what the open market value on a bike like this is...1977 kz1000...I am looking at buying one but want to make sure I can recoup what I pay for it at the end of the summer. once I get the 650 done.

Prices are high at the start of summer and end up low at the end of summer. Good reason for that as well - supply and demand. Good luck in recouping your money - I mean you will have used it so should you really expect to see the same return?

There is no magic number on what its worth -better to look at Ebay for a rough idea of market value.

cheers
Andy

I don't know if you guys where joking around and say 2 dollars and forty seven cents, or $2,400

If the things really in mint condition it's worth an easy $2,000. If you live near a big town probably $2,500 right now.

Good luck selling,

I've thought the same - this is not the place to find many Kawasaki fans. I will try my best to put an answer out here for you.

With it running and in good original condition, I would guess $2,000~2,500 is a fair price. You will not get the premium that a Z1 brings of course - the 1000 just lost their appeal. There is something about a Kaw 900 - that makes many just want one. I love mine.

Here is a current auction -

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=260249824357

It's over $2,200 and is nearly rotted back to earth - not 10 pieces on the bike usable and 18 people want it ---

No.  You won't find a "straight answer" to that question on any forum.  You may be able to find a lot of people guessing or telling you what they'd pay for it if they happened to be looking for that particular bike (but they're not).  No one, on any internet forum, or in person, can tell you what a bike is "worth on the open market", regardless of what some folks believe.  The only way to find out is to put it up for sale on the open market and see what it sells for.  Then, and only then, will you have your answer.

Great reply Gordon!  No one has the true answer but yourself!  Is it worth buying and riding for a season, then trying to sell?  Doubt you will want to sell it after you have kicked around on it for a while, especially coming from a 650....

Do some research on the bike at: http://www.kzrider.com/

Here is a pile I picked up locally for $400:

It is a titled 77 KZ1000, big boar kit, head off engine due to cam chain tensioner problem.  I did get the original spoked tires/rims and breaks including the front forks and rear swing arm.  The late model front end, tires and breaks are off a ZX 10R or 636RR Ninja as far as I can tell (lady said Katana, but no Katana I have seen had radial mounted brakes, wave rotors and as much adjustment of the front forks...).  I think I did OK in the deal?

Gordon I have to disagree with what you wrote. There are actually people that track values of certain models of bikes and have a very good idea of the value. Some people make their living at it, others just plain watch the prices cuz they like that certain model.

If what you said was true, there would be no bike appraisers.

When I sold my sandcast I had a very good idea of what they were selling at, I researched it thoroughly and spent a lot of time doing so.. so I would say there are people that know the going rates of bikes.

Granted there is less Kawi people on here than Honda, but they are out there..

Yep, me (the other Gordon) - I've been watching Z1 znd KZ's sell on EBay every night for a long time. I've tracked them by adding every original, non modified bike to my watch list so I could follow the auctions through their entire bid cycle - have done this for many, many months now. I also track H2/Mach IV's and since I'm now looking for an all-original, low-mile 1974 Suzuki GT750 for my collection, I could give you the averages of the last 30 GT750's sold. IT's all about doing the research and having an interest in what you're collecting.

The $2,000~2,500 pegs the KZ100's probable re-sale value. What's it worth as a commuter - probably could get a newer, shaft-drive and water-cooled bike of newer vintage for the same money. You are going to have to find someone who really wants a KZ1000 because they had one years ago to get more than that.

I bought this 900 in February for $3,500 - this was my 12th Kawasaki. I knew this one had potential since it was 95% complete, 18,000 miles, within driving distance, and ran. I had done my research..........

Gordon

I dont track CB750,s most of the time.. but if I have a project and am activelly buying it really pays to know the market.. like when I was putting together a Ducati single pile..or 101 Scout ..or JD parts..

Before I set the reserve on the sandcast, i spent a lot of time going through old issues of Wlanecks, and had been tracking the bikes on ebay etc.. so I knew the range..

A local mechanic tried telling me it had to be running or it would not bring a fair price. I refused to start it as I was pretty sure that it would end up getting restored anyway.. It brought  1/3 more than my reserve.. a pretty good price for that time , Dec 2000.

If you dont track values it gets a bit tough to detrmine what you should pay for the bits on ebay... or you wait forever to get a deal...and years later , still waiting..
