Ahhh, it's green until you realize where the electricity comes from. I have a kink for steam engines and have seen steam powered motorcycles. Now that's eccentric!!

Below is another elec. bike- no details, and a really old steam bike.

The up side to people converting to electric, steam, etc. is that it usually puts good leftover parts out on the market.  I got a set of almost perfect Yoshimura exhausts for my VF500 Interceptor that way.  $56 seemed too good to pass up.

This is the first I saw on video (haven't specifically looked for it).  A while back there was another guy who was selling his motor on Craiglist because he didn't need it any more and he posted some pics on craigslist.  It's around these forums somewhere....

ah, here it is, but pics don't load any more :(

I'm wondering why he opted to use the bike's crankshaft and transmission instead of just putting a sprocket on the electric motor and connecting it directly to the drive chain?

Probably so he can have a clutch. I would want a clutch, for sure.

That's what I thought at first, too, but there's no clutch lever. :-\

A transmission make perfect sense to me.  An electric motor will only spin so fast.

Which is a lot faster than a gas engine could.  Obviously he knows what he's doing, I'm just wondering why he made that choice.  The transmission reduces the crankshaft rpm's to the drive sprocket allowing the engine to rotate faster where it produces more power.  Electric motors typically don't have as big a problem of low torque at low rpm's, but I guess you can still get more usable power by spinning it much faster than the driven wheel.

I think he should have left the fuel tank on it, just for aesthetic appeal. Or shape some kind of battery to fit inside it? I guess though, people would be skeptical if it really was electric with a fuel tank...But it just looks ugly without one.

Something tells me he wasn't going for looks with this project. ;)

Well i suppose he wanted to get the ugly beast working first. THEN maybe he'll do some detailing to it, like painting smiley faces on the batteries or somethin or i know, make a cowling like those vintage racers and have it go around the batteries! Ya, aerodynamic baby, im sure he'll be able to do 45 mph then!

He's wise to wear shorts because when that pig wipes out it'll be easier for the paramedics to wash all that battery acid off of his legs- alert the EPA! Any guess as to how much it weighs? Four (?) batts plus that motor, as compared to a 550 engine tipping the scales at about 150lbs.

Ok whiners.  Time to post your spectacularly refined creations/accomplishments for us to critique.

The guy made something functional out of refuse.  He's not asking you to buy it.  I don't even think he is asking for malicious comments.  It's simply, look what I did with my spare time, knowledge, and junk that I found.

Your comments say more about you, than they do of him or his project. IMO.  ::)

You're right TT, I just can't help myself sometimes. I was going to add in my last post kudos to the guy actually having the motivation to do... something! Even if it is a dead end tree hugger pipe dream, but I digress...  if I had any will to get off my butt I'd build that cycle car (ala Morgan) I've been dreaming of. Or renovate the 550, or finish my degree, or...

Now, if it was a steam powered bike he'd have me and Jay Leno praising him no end.
