If you lived on an island in the Pacific Ocean like Derek would you wear shoes?!

Got the lower layer of drain rock in.

Inspector came.................not real happy with my property line assumptions. No Pass ??? :o ::)
Dude that showed up had no idea we had even had to email in our form photos!!!!! Talk about out of the loop.

We found one pin under the ground today after inspector came with a "spike finder"  and gained 4 inches of my neighbours property, but lost the 4 inches I needed to be 20ft from road allowance :P

My property is at an angle, so I'm really only have a sliver 12 ft long starting from 0" to 4 " over the back 12ft  1/2 of the garage along the road side.
DON'T Theses guys have any sense of humour ???

Well, I was gonna tell Derek that he could have come down and "practice building" that shop in my backyard and then go back up there and do it right. But, all things considered, just forget I said anything. :-X :-X :-X :-X

Lots of Luck Derek, on getting things squared away for those stinking inspectors.

A few days of down time were needed to sort out property lines and road allowances. As stated before I thought I might be 4" on the bad regarding road allowance. Had a team of surveyors here on Tues..$700.00...turns out I'm now 5 3/4" out!!  Fun Money ;D

I never dealt with the 1st building inspector since I was at the dentist for my daughter that day.
Decided the best approach was to jump over his head to the head of the Regional District Inspectors and deal with him alone.

I convinced him to visit the Island today....."something this guy does not normally do".  He hummed and hawed, said I should go for a "Variance". ...........That takes 18 months here ::)  I said that was not a solution I was happy with and came at him with these options...

#1 change the road side wall from 2 x 6 construction to 2 x 4..........gains me 3+ inches to the wall, but still leaves me 1 1/2+ inches on the BAD SIDE of things

#2. dig out the inside of the foundation and simply pour another sill.  Ha, Ha, NOT!

#3. Slide my 2 x 6 wall on the concrete sill 1 3/4" overhanging the inside and when the concrete inside is laid up just bang in a 2x6 PT board along the length of the wall for support.

I had done my research all options were up to code but I hated the idea of doing #2. or #3,  But #1 was still off of the legal boundary

He really went out of his way to help.

I'm tearing off the 2 x 6 roadside wall tomorrow, and then laying a 2 x 4 wall flush on the inside edge of the 8" concrete wall and we both walked away..........

Me almost in tears I was so grateful for this guy working with me as a guy trying his best to obey all the laws and codes.
It does pay to be honest.

P.S. He said to me just before he left
"just make sure you call ME for the rest of your inspections"  ;D ;D

All hooked up with the BOSS 8)

Well Derek.......I for one DO give a crap about your garage!! It sucks that the initial planning went to hell on ya but cool that you got it worked out and can progress with the project. My best friend in San Jose,Ca. just got done with his shop. He had a few probs with inspectors at the beginning but his biggest problem was the main contractor........He hired them on the cheap through his wife's real estate management contacts and he experienced what its like to host a back burner project. Nothing much happened in the time frame it should have. He was paying them as the project progressed and they started wanting more & more cash with previous things left unfinished. I think I would rather pay more but have a strict timeframe........maybe one of these fine days!!!

Thanks for the comments guys.

I interviewed 5 or 6 people for this job.
Every one works by the hour, I have an account at the lumber yard for materials, and any extra contracts like excavators, surveyors etc. I look after on my own. It really helps to be onsite every day as well ;D

I'm very happy with my choices. Carpenter knows his stuff "works by the hour" and my buddy who is out of work "paying cash every day" is doing great on the job site. It's nice when you can employ old friends when they need it.  ;D

I went back to bed this morning when they both arrived today and I took a break. a bit hung and stinky :P

THEY  on the other hand removed the offending 6 inch wall and rebuilt a 2x4 wall in it's place to appease the powers that be Including windows. ;D
