Thank You very much.  This is the last place that I am leaking oil.  Once this comes in I should be leak free.

Ummm, I hope this works for you.  I replaced mine, and after a few hours to get the old one out and the new one in, I leave a nice little puddle everywhere I go.  I do think its worth trying to do, but don't be too upset if it doesn't cure the problem.  Good Luck!

I believe that the procedure for removing and replacing the seal has been covered in other threads, but you should be able to do it pretty easily without any damage, and obtain a good seal.  I removed the old one by poking it with an awl, being careful not to scratch the shifter shaft, and gently screwing a wood screw into the hole left by the awl, then pulling it out.  I then placed the new seal over the shaft, and using a piece of ¾” pvc pipe, pushed it snuggly into place.  The whole process took <15 min. from start to finish, and so far no sign of any leak.

Neudl that sounds like a good way to do it.  Mine used to not leak there and then a few days ago it started and seems to be getting worse.  I am hoping this does work.

And bistro this is the last place that my bike leaks.  I fixed the clutch basket leak and then the head gasket and the tach plug leak and this is the only place the bike leaks as of now.  Guess we will see how well it all holds up.

So do I need to drain the oil to replace this seal?  I would rather not if I dont have to but if I do I will.

It is extremely easy to damage the seal lip when you slide it over the shifter spline and down the shaft. Check the whole shaft outside the seal area for any damage - a small gouge or ding can tear the seal... if you smooth off any bumps with a dead smooth file or sharpening stone all is well. Dents and depressions won't be a problem but sharpish bits pushed above the shaft surface are.
I thoroughly clean then wrap the spline with scotch tape with a bit of a point formed in tape. Smear the tape and shaft with oil and slide the seal on.

Thank you very much guys.  Lloyd I think that is the shortest post I have ever seen from you.  Short and to the point.  :)

Ya thanks bodi I just got back from dinner at my families and was getting ready to start in on the project.  I will have to try your idea with the tape.

Hopefully this will stop the leak and then no more leaks.

I just opened up the package and only ordered one seal and got 2.  Woohoo now I have a backup.

another place to check i think is behind the sproket, the chain seems to wear on the engine there, this if left unattended will start to leak oil i think, i used a spacer on sprocket, behind it to get more clearance between engine and chain, don't know if anyone else has this problem or not ;)
