It's going....just slowly.  Spent a week in the Methodist trauma unit involving two surgeries on my lower left leg.  Now I'm home with a walker.  No weight on the leg for 4 wks.  Not the summer I had in mind, but oh well.  I'm alive and it could have been worse right?   ;)

Wow, did your leg tangle with the car?

4 wks will fly, though there will still be some healing after that I know.  Plenty of summer left, yes could've been worse. Hang in there.

Not exactly I guess. But I do have Mark's (HondaMan's) transistorized booster installed, which should be prettty good. I really like the fit and concept. Plus it allows me to see the points firing under the Frankenberry clear point cover.   :D   :D

Yeah, pretty sure the primary impact was my lower leg with the bumper of the van.  I received pics from State Farm of the bike and it honestly doesn't look bad....but the buyout offer is pretty generous, so I'm pretty sure I'm just gonna let it go.  No way of knowing without going myself to look if the frame is bent, etc.  :(

Glad you're home Chris.  Hard decision on the buyout or not... but you are right.  The 550's seem to be everywhere nowadays.

My attorney told me they use a 50-70% repair to value ratio for totalling older bikes. They research comparable bikes throughout the country. If you got a really good offer they are being nice hoping that you'll not ask for more. ie pain and suffering, long term damage, loss of wages. The bike should be the last thing to think about and you can tell them that. You gotta get healthy and rule out long term complications first. I had 2 offers on my bike within the first week and I told them it will be on the back burner until everything else is determined. If you sign off it's done. The guy that hit me has State Farm in Indiana. They called me last week. They were VERY nice and helpful and used the term 'after we get all the medical taken care of then we'll make you a settlement offer'.

You were on the 550 or the VFR? I would think the VFR would be more available than similar condition 550, but being a 550 owner I am biased.
Definitely take care of the medical first, the bike is replaceable, you are not.
Reality, as cold as it is , you will not be 100% again with plates in the leg. You might have close to full recovery but if they are large enough to be detected by the airport metal detectors that is a major pita to deal with when traveling with the paperwork needed and secondary scans delaying clearing TSA. Then there is the aches from this that make themselves known in cold damp weather. None of which are any fun. Rehab with the PT (Pain & Torture) specialists takes time and if you are working then making up time away from work takes extra time. Plus your travel to PT and extra miles and wear on the auto. Then you have the opportunities you will lose out on for riding and get togethers or trips you might have taken or things you would normally do without special accommodations. Going to the movies or getting ready for going somewhere or having a special seating requirement not as easily or quickly acccomodated if you go out. Difficulty and extra breaks when traveling any distance.

I had a 95% achilles tear which took over a year to rehab, close to 18 months to be 90% again. Had permanent partial nerve damage as a result of the injury and loss of range of movement that requires extra stretching for that leg. Settlement was small because it occurred on government property (military property - civilian contractor job).
Accidents happen but doesn't make it OK.

We had a good shop day June 16th. A little late posting an update, thought I'd do it Tues night. Then this happened:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=123206.0

Now I carry a little bottle of Nitro.   ;)

Got the box back from Brown's, super nice stuff as you can imagine. One piece was wrong. Called them Mon P and by Tuesday Ronnie called me back and said send it back they'd make it right NC. But by then I was in the ambulance.

May get some work done Sunday, maybe not.

Seems I might heal faster than Indy's broken leg. IRonic.

Pics tomorrow.

Pre-stent: We mocked up and checked the deck height. Squish band of piston is flush with cyl deck. Add in 10thou for base gasket and 40 thou for head cheese, subtract some squish and we should be right at the proper deck height. But we'll check it one more time.

Box of goodies from Brown's:

This should look good with a chrome 6mm nut and washer, spinning neath Joe's clear point's cover:

Only mistake, I told them that if they couldn't get this scratch out, don't chrome it. They chromed it and the scratch is still there:

Ronnie said he got my note and communication breakdown between him and the plater tech. Send it back and they will fix NC. So I'll find a few other pieces to make it a box and send back Monday. Good outfit.
Old (talller) centerstand vs new. Hard to tell in the pic, but the old one while still shiny is washed out v the new one.

All for now. Scheduled for a light shop day Sunday, taking it a bit easy.

Ron,

Lots of bike porn rolling into the shop.  The Tach backplate/cup, I don't see the scratch, maybe I'm not looking in the right spot. Would think they would be able to plate with copper a couple times to be able to fill the scratch. But then again, it just might not work that way since it is over the whole part. Could it be sanded level to the scratch base and replated?  Might need to circle the spot. Convex surfaces are tough to sand smooth when trying to level a scratch I would imagine.
Browns probably has a small brick in the expansion wing with your name on it... ;D

Take it easy, heal up, and get strong again. Should have plenty of time ahead to enjoy the bike, barring the unforeseen.  One thing is for certain we don't know how long we have on earth, only God knows. Friend's husband died few weeks ago of pancreatic cancer. With that form of cancer they generally find it too late and you go quickly. Guess that is better than suffering sometimes if it is your time to go.

An old dark humor joke,
"I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather, not like his passengers screaming."

Omg that chrome is gorgeous.  I think if I had a center stand that nice, I'd have to carry around a little red carpet to set it up on so that it never touched asphalt!   ;D

Oh wow I just read further up.....glad you are ok Ron!  Take it easy.

Thanks Raf:

That scratch is, if you draw a line between the screw holes, its off to the upper left a tad. They got about half of it, But I wanted it all gone. Ronnie (Brown) didn't seem to think it should be a problem.

I've heard that joke, good one!

Indy: Thanks, you and me both. You'd be surprised how well the original centerstand held up. IT was done locally, I think it was Production Chrome in Indy, about 1980. About 20 of that actually riding regularlay. The chrome on the feet is still intact.

Gotta raise some money to replenish the treasury. Sold a Joker Brake Stay and a 9 hole clutch cover for a really sweet price. Buyers happy too, I think.

Sent the redo Speedo base back to Brown's but had to add some more to fill the box. Their chrome is so much brighter than OEM, I sent the Tach base, which was new, but just too different. Sent the sidestand and several bolts and nuts.

Talking about my recent malady, Ronnie Brown told me he had a heart valve at 19, a pace maker at 40, and a stent just recently. He's 58.  Brothers in bandaids.   ;D

I've been doing some piddly stuff here and there, not much headway though. Between regular work and rehab, I've not much enthusiasm for more.

Objectively, I'm in real good shape, recovery and rehab wise. Subjectively, I'll admit to a little depression and lack of spirit. We had a 10 day trip to the Smokies already planned and luckily I'm in good enough shape to go. But that will be two more weekends with no headway. Don't know if we'll have Internet connection in the woods or not.

But with a little R&R, get away from it all, I'll likely come back rarin to go and get that shyt box back on the road!  See ya!   :D
