Thanks Ron Ill need to have a talk with Joe about getting one myself. I just got the alternator upgrade from Anders and wow what a difference to the headlight - so much brighter all the time. Of course bike is running great as well so plan to get some more miles on there this summer. Sorry to hear about your recent health issues but we are all with you in spirit in seeing this build get finished. Really think you are going to enjoy this engine - MikeR did my 810cc K2 (and stock K4) and everytime I ride it I get a huge grin.

good luck!
Andy

Thanks. Andy, do you have relays in your headlight? Like a relay kit from HondaMan. That really helps the headlight brightness as well

I would bet that Anders charging system kit is similar to going from a generator to and alternator on old cars...the generator not pumping out much current at low speeds and the system voltage & current being higher across the board.
Relays certainly help boost the light output of the headlamp with the stock system.

I've lost track: Andy or David: What's the stock alt output and the Anders output?

No headlight relay Ron - I should have but the alt upgrade has the benefit to me of running heated gear in the Fall/early Winter/early Spring - the bike loves the cold temps.

Output for Anders system is 14.2 at idle (I think).

38 and 42 amp systems in Anders kit if I recall correctly. Don't know stock system capacity...

Going for Watts. Aren't watts = V X Amps?  Anyway, stock watts is 190 to 210 depending on model/draw of field coil Per HondaMan's book.

If Anders is 38a, and v = 12; then w = 456! Double stock and in the range of modern sport touring bikes.

Watts is more useful to me as that's what modern stuff is described. And you add up all your appliances wattage to see where you stand.

Hairdryer, toaster, air mattress pump, etc.   ;)

Still could use relays on the hlight and horn. USe some Nautilus Horns as well.

I found the thread. The first upgrade is 32a, he's working on the 45 (much heavier rotor).

w = 32a x 12

w = 384! Still a huge bump from stock.

Anders has stock as 17a = 204w; in line with HondaMan's numbers.

True the other advantage is a permanent magnet rotor alternator can still run with a dead battery.

Im sure its somewhere in this thread, but if you wouldn't mind, Ron, could you give a brief explanation of the relay(s) you have for your headlight?

this is news to me and it would be great to get some more brightness for safety's sake.

New out of bag OEM Dipstick on left. My original DS, with hole for safety wire, back when I was racing, but re-chromed from Brown's. Can't beat Brown for gooey wet chrome.

New to your build thread but its a damn sweet bike.  You know, I accidentally didn't tighten down my original dipstick on my 74 one day (maybe after a couple of drinks) and went riding and it flew off. . .  I ordered a replacement from Honda and mine looks the same way.  I don't think it is anywhere near as shiny and polished as the original.  Every time I am messing with the bike I rub a cloth over it thinking it will help but it never does :(

While its possible to put this together one's self, Mark Paris aka HondaMan has done a bangup job. The relays fit in the headlight shell. He supplies all the jumpers necessary, color coded, to keep the wiring in the shell as well. Once installed you can hear the relays trip in the shell, which is way cool.  Here's the page from his site. Take some time to look around. I have one of his swingarm upgrades, and his transistor pak for the ignition as well.

After taking the better part of a week just to read through the entire thing. Whew!!
What a motherload of information! I know just where I will be when my project starts getting bogged down!
Getting a dose of inspiration from here!

You, and BBB deserve a well earned congrats just for the shear determination to stay with it to the finish.
The bike looks great, and will no doubt run just as well.

Just a thought, and feel free to dismiss it. If the igniton switch bracket could be attached to the HB clamp. Could it not also be attached to the lower bolt on the frame gusset where you originally planned?  Maybe with a chrome bracket?

BTW. Your build finally got me started reading ZAMM. It might take a bit longer than a week though!

Back to reasearching what can be done with a forgotten stepchild!

Ghost; Welcome aboard. Yes we've covered a lot of ground. That was part of the theme, do things I'd never done to one before.

AS to the ignition switch placement, I think anywhere other than the near stock position or the HBar loation, runs afoul of something like pigtail too short, hits exhaust pipe or the like. The original plan would've worked had I had a full mockup to get a better placement, rather than just eyeballing it and missing. I'm OK with 2nd choice on the HBar. Shows off the Yamiya key fob.

The key (maybe) to getting thru ZAMM is to regulate expectations. Pirsig says right off, not much about Zen or Motorcycle Maintenance included. It's the story of part of a poor man's soul, among other things.

Hope to get to the engine top end soon.   ;D

I had relays in the stock HLight of my HawkGT, so I know first hand they really work.

Now I have HondaMan's relays in the CB750 HLite with an H4/CIBIE lens in a Kawasaki replica shell. I just came in from the shop and ran it thru its paces. I haven't actually been on the road with it yet, I'm sure it will do what it did on the Hawk: 30%+ brighter lite with more reliability in the switch.

Did some small detail chassis work. takes time, but should all be done now. Disappointed with the SPeedo. Idiot lights don't line up with the holes in the face. Glue on the flasher lens blocke it partially.  :(  Won't worry about it till winter. I'll let Lecram fix it. Should have used him to begin with, but I'd already arranged to let the other place do it before I even knew of Lecram.

On to the engine: installed the ex spigots and cam tower studs. Used anti seize on the spigots, Teflon thread sealer on the studs.

Got a Regina Gold ORing chain from eBay, suitable for 900cc. Gr8 price $85 Free S&H. Color coded sets off the frame. Sweet.

I'd asked 2 local shops for a Gold colored chain. Both told me can only get Gold colors on real expensive chains like for Hayabusa: $250+. I believed them and bot a cheaper gray chain.

Should have stuck to the internet. It may not always be the truth, but its right as often as the shops are, in my experience. (More actually).

anyone want to buy a BikeMaster 530 ORing chain, sans master link. Got about 5 miles on it? (Well you can have the master, but the clip is used.)

Hey Ron....Getting exciting to possibly see the bike in person :)  Any roll out plans?

So I believe that the Thursday after Labor Day is the Indy Vin Moto thing at the Steer In.  1st Thursday of every month if I remember correctly.  You thinking of coming?

I'm heading overseas for 3 weeks after that, so I'm looking to bring the triple out that night.  Looks like there's been a pretty good turn out lately at the Steer In nights.

"Gotta a goal of Memorial Day to roll out, for the second time."

Oops, Memorial Day = Labor Day.

Cheers, Joe
Thanks CBJ. Would like to make the SIVM but not making promises. First things first, get it running. Anticipating that I can't ride it when it does run, I'm looking at trailers. There are some nice single rail trlrs with low loading heights, folding features. Fit for a trailer queen.

Hope the overseas thing is not of a military nature? I'd come to Vin Moto Night to see your 3 banger.
