Alternatives to key switch
« on: June 25, 2008, 01:44:11 PM »
I have a '77 750K that in stock form had the ignition switch mounted up near the gauges.  I know the older models had them mounted below the tank.  I would like to clean up the gauge area as much as possible and either move the switch, find a small aftermarket replacement that can be mounted out of the way, or even possibly doing away with the key switch and having some hidden kill switch as my security.  I've heard of people rigging the starter so that it will only crank if you do something weird like put the high beam and left turn signal on or something like that.

I would love to see what other members have done.

I have a 500 that was radically modified by the PO who was an electrical/electronic engineer.

As well as completely digital speedo/rev counter and home made electronic ignition, he fitted a keyless ignition switch. Housed in a box below the r/h side panel, there was just one switch which you had to press in a certain code (at a certain speed) to switch on the ignition. I could never get the damned thing to switch on (off was easy!) so I replaced it with an aftermarket ignition switch (from www.wemoto.com). The switch is the same for CG125 to Cb750!

As long as you switch the wires as per the original switch you can use anything and mount it anywhare.

Mine is located below the r/h sidecover as that's where all the wiring (for the old electronic switch) went. Now I ride around with a key hanging from there like an old Harley!

Mine will only start after I blow into the breathalizer tube.

But it wasn't my idea......

I have done away with the key on my bike (though I am having issues presently...cant get it started but that mod is not the issue). I have a oval oil tank with a battery box. I have a toggle switch on the right side for on/off and then a push button on the left side. I have not wired in my additional "safety/hidden" on/off switch yet. I want to get it running first.

Good luck.

And by the way, My triples look really clean!

Nice, that's the first morse-code based ignition switch that I've heard of :D

Mystic: you are truly mystic (or psychic)

The code to switch on the bike was -*-* which is "H" in Morse code...
