So how fast can the cb450 5 speed go compared to the 550.
What is the highway cruising speed on it?

depends on the weight/size of the rider. state of tume on the bike, how many miles on it, gearing, tires weather conditions.

When I had my '73 450 (DOHC twin)..and after it was broken-in (bought it new)..I could cruise easily @ 75 mph.  Took it up to about 100 mph a few times..(think it was getting close to red-line then..it's been over 35 years..a little foggy).  But I think it could have gone a little over 100 if I'd wanted to push it.

Remember though..that was on a relatively new bike.  I don't think I'd want to try that on most of these old Honda's..unless I was very certain about the mechanical condition of what I was riding.  Some of the rebuilds on these threads..especially on the 550's and 750's..seem like they'd be as reliable as when they were new.

Compared to my present 550..well it's OLD (31 years old 10K miles)..so I don't push it.  But I cruise @ 60-65 often..take it up to 75 occasionally when speed limits allow.  At 75 though..it starts to get a bit buzzy..and it doesn't feel stable enough to push much more.  I have taken it up to 90 mph though..a bit scary for these old bones..and on such an old bike.

I was clocked by police  on route 3 in March of 1971 at 105 on one. At that time I probably weighed between 160 and 170.

I weigh in @ 205 or so, and I have cruised my CB450 at 70mph all day long with no issue. I dont have a speedo on the bike, but I have been paced by others that do..

So how fast can the cb450 5 speed go compared to the 550.
What is the highway cruising speed on it?

They have equivalent top speeds, the 450 will get there a bit quicker. As heavy as a 450 is, it's still lighter than a550.
Any stock 450 that can do an honest 100 mph is a good one.

I wasn't sure about this one, myself. I would have thought that the 450 would have been good for a little over 100. I mean, the CB77 305 Super Hawk was said to be capable of 110 and I figured that, from the way the 450s run that I remember, they would do at least a little better than th 305s. Now, don't anyone get the idea that I'm doubting the sources here, I'm just saying what I always figured. ;)

Bill -

Notice I said an honest 100 mph.
I had a new SuperHawk, back in The Day, it would not reach 100, despite Honda's claims.
I also had a pair of CB450 K2's - both would do about 105 actual, which was real good even in those days.

Anyone here with a stock 450 that can tell us what his does??
I'm too old to go that fast on a 450 any more.

Yeah, I was thinking about what I'd read and heard. Didn't have actual experience doing it. My 250 Hawk would run pretty well, but when I tried to see what the top end would be, I was up to 80 and suddenly someone pilled out up ahead of me and I had to shut down. I felt like it had more to offer, but not sure how much. I never had the opportunity to check out a 450 to see what it would do, but I used to get beat by one all the time. ::) But, that is as it should be.

I would be interested to know the top speed in each gear, along with the average top speed myself. ;)

                              Take care, Bill ;)

I'm pretty sure mine will do the ton, since I've cut about everything I can off of it and the engine is fresh. I think I read in a book somewhere the  four speed ones would do 102mph brand new. I haven't really got on mine much, but I don't have a speedo so I don't know...lol.
