Engine wont come out of 78 CB750K
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:14:27 PM »
For the life of me I cant get the engine to come out of my 78 CB750K.
The manual says to lift the back of the engine and it will come out but it wont...it's loose in there but the exhaust studs hit the frame. I've broken 1 off trying.
Is there a secret trick? I've used the search feature but found non that go into specific detail on a 750. I've even tried laying the bike on it's side and trying to lift the frame from the engine, no go.

Thanks.

This problem comes up quite often, always good for a laugh except for the poor owner wrestling with the removal problem.
One guy forgot to disconnect the chain and it was holding the engine in, another didn't realise he could remove the oil filter from the front or the sump from under neath.
I found with my CB650 that it was a case of getting the engine in just the right position.
Lift the rear of engine up from it's normal resting place once the long axle bolts are removed, tilt engine forward then lift whole thing directly up until it hits top bar of frame (where tank would be).
Then out from right hand side (as if you are sitting on the bike).
Helps to have at least one good mate with heaps of patience to assist you. ;D

The chain and oil filter are off.
How much do I need to lift up the back of the engine, are we talking an inch or 4 or 5 inches?

I used a car jack with a piece of wood on it so sump didn't get damaged, it gave me some control over how high I needed to go.
As for tilt height it's quite a bit to clear the rear engine mounts.

A search in the SOHC Bikes section of the forum should yield lots of results. Most (myself included) seem to have the best luck with laying the bike on its right side and lifting the frame off of the engine–if you've got enough guys to help.  ;)

Remove the breather cover bolted to the valve cover.  Exhaust studs do make it more difficult but they can be a PIA to remove so I usually leave them in place and proceed carefully.  As mentioned, this topic does come up frequently and if you search from the "tech forums" page you will most certainly find a good number of suggestions. . . .Why is this question in the "Project Shop"???

+1 on the car jack and board.

I put my motorcycle jack right next to the bike at the same level as the engine.  I then put a 2 ton jack(the kind with little wheels) under it with a 2x4 between the jack and engine.  I lifted the engine just high enough then rolled the jack forward, lowered jack, repositioned jack, lifted motor again, pushed forward again, until it was out....wasn't quite that easy but it eventually did come out

If I were you I would not bother, just send me the bike and i will take that deamon off your hands.  ;D
Seriously, if you search the forum, there was a picture tutorial on how it was done without damaging anything. It is worth a search.

cussing a lot usually helps me ;D

i just removed the studs and used some new cap screw instead. therefore makes another removal/install in the future a little easier.
