Play in the bottom tripple. What does it mean?
« on: August 25, 2008, 10:43:05 AM »
I finally get my forks fixed. Had the entire front end off.
Not I get it all back together. And notice a priblem.

With the bike on the centerstand. If i lean forward and
apply pressure on the front end..

The bottom tripple tree moves a little bit.

Does this mean that I need new bearings?

thanks in advance.

Possible they just need to be adjusted.  Loosen the top tree clamps and top nut, then reach under the top tree with your shock adjusting tool and tighten down the retaining ring.  It should be tight enough to keep things from wobbling but not so tight that steering action becomes stiff.

Looks like this:

But anything that'll let you turn the adjusting ring (#12 below) would work just fine.  The shock tool is nice because it's thin and clearance under the top tree is kinda tight.

Do not overtighten those Jerry.  Just a snug or you will damage them.  You will be tightening #12 on your parts list.  Not that top chrome nut on the tree.  I bet those bearings (#22) could use a little grease.  You can pack them with the triple tree on.  You just have to loosen it and drop it down a spec if you decide to do it.  Good luck with it...
