Head gasket sealant and stud torque
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:59:07 PM »
I'll be putting my 77 CB750F engine back together this weekend. In the box with my gasket set from CycleXchange, was a printed pate with gasket installation recommendations. They recommend Threebond #1104 or Honda bond. They also indicated you can use copper coat, to coat the head gaskets. I don't want to run the risk of material getting into the oil galleries and causing an obstruction, which is why I wasn't going to use sealant on the gaskets. On the other hand,  I'd rather it doesn't leak. I looked in the FAQ's and there isn't too much on which is superior. Since I'll have to buy the material, any group preference?

The paper supplied also indicated that the heavy duty APE studs should be torqued to  20-22 ft/lb not the 13.7-15.2 factory stud torque. Unless I hear otherwise, that's my plan. Torque in sequence, let stand 24hrs. Repeat the process by loosing one nut at a time (in the torquing sequence )1/4 turn, re torque and go to next nut.

Thanks!

I used a copper coat spray adhesive. I'd recommend using some type of adhesive to keep the gasket in place and to help it seal. Curious what others use.

Anyway, if it's recommended why do otherwise?
