I think I once heard that some states will give a motorcycle endorsement on your license if you complete an MSF course. I may be completely wrong but it might be worth looking into.

Quick followup:  I hope to take the knowledge portion of the test in the next couple of days just to get my motorcycle permit (already have a car driver's license).

Any pointers?  Will I have to know both the entire car drivers manual as well as the motorcycle supplement, or will I just have to deal with the motorcycle portion?  Anybody know?

Thanks,

Ross, i took the written part. i live in portland oregon so im sure its the same for you. I downloaded thier manual off the internet for mopeds and motorcycles, read it from cover to cover over two days. Read it again an hour before the test and passed and only missed one. Every answer you need is in that manual, the motorcycle one. You have to read that thing from cover to cover though, the questions they ask are not really just common sense, they want the answer thats in the book. Good luck.

Hey Guys:

I took the test here in CA without the MSF course.  I had ridden for years and had an endorsement in MI some years back.

Written test was mainly common sense, but there's always a few off the wall questions that are really hard to get right.  I remember there being a question I presume was about "countersteering", but that's a technique where a video is worth a thousand words.  "push down on right handle-grip whilst leaning towards the...."  You get the idea.

Anyway, the riding test was preposterous.  It did not test your actual ability to ride on the street whatsoever.  I had heard that it was tough, and here in CA it's well known that you can't pass it with a large bike of any sort unless you are an awsome rider.  The tough part was riding around a circle that was about 8 or less feet in diameter, keeping your front tire within a band of 8 inches or so.

I practiced quite a bit though in the evenings before my test I couldn't locate the painted course at my local DMV -- so I just practiced riding in circles a bunch in some parking lot.  I could turn around in a parking space

Day of the test there was 5 or so people watching, and some indian guy who obviously hadn't ridden a cycle administered the test.  Couple questions about controls, then it was ON.

The course was sort of like a basketball key except long and thin.  About 20 feet long, circle 8-feet and the key part was about 5 or 6 feet wide.  Down the center was cones.  Basically, you had to ride down around the cones, enter the circle, ride around it twice without your front tire leaving the circle, then ride back the other way around the cones.  There was another variation, where you had to go around the circle the other way -- this was way harder.  I could do the counter-clockwise circle easy, but the other way was tough.

I read online that you should turn in the idle screw to idle about 2000, so that in the course you can feather the clutch to control your speed.  First gear at idle is much too fast, you can't do it at that speed.  This saved my ass.  Even so, it took me to tries to get the CCW circle.

I passed, but I have to say this didn't check anything except your ability to masterfully park your motorcycle.

A newbie friend of mine took the MSF course and was awarded his license the same day.  When I tutored him on my motorcycle he had no idea what he was doing.  He could barely even start out in first gear.  Didn't know really how to change gears.

In his defense, he had NEVER ridden a motorcycle before the class.  But I'm suprised he got a license.  Under my tutelage however, in a big empty parking lot, he's gonna be alright and won't die.

Good luck, the state tests are ridiculous.

On a different note - I went for my car licence after riding bikes for 12 years.  I only did it because my wife cried & said "How am I going to get the baby home?" (she was 7 months pregnant).  I had a few Driving School lessons (to learn what I would be tested on), then I did the test (with the Driving School teacher in the back seat).  I was taken around what can only be described as the worse possible roads in the area!  For example, a steep downhill road that turned 45 degrees before a stop sign, with a main road and railway bridge blocking the view - I was then asked to turn right through heavy traffic (without being able to see what was coming!).  My teacher said later that they put me through a route that had been banned 3 years earlier because EVERYONE failed it!  I passed.  I explained to my teacher that they did this because I would go straight onto my full car licence, and they wanted to see if I deserved it.  Yep, #$%*s, the lot of them!

It could be worse, I had a friend who lost his bike licence & had to re-sit his test.  Halfway around the route he was chased by a dog!

Hah! That was probably part of their test.

Right there with you...I live in Bend.  Hear that the test @DMV in Prineville is very simple except, for the cones...What's up with the cones!
Also, Your right about giving answers from the book.  Common sense is NOT the right answer!

I just got back from getting my permit.  I missed one question:

"When passing a line of parked cars, what is the worst risk:"
a) A car pulling away from the curb
b) An opening car door
c) A person stepping out from between the parked cars

I guessed "C" because it involved a person.  It was actually "A"

Got the rest of them right though and got my permit.  Now I can sign up for the drivers course and get my license -- which is good, because I just bought a '72 CB500!  Woohoo!

The test itself took about 6 minutes.  But I spent over an hour at the DMV.  Big surprise there.

What you really meant is that "A" is the answer the nitwit who wrote the test wants.
It's a totally stupid question, they are all extremely hazardous situations especially to the rider.

Precisely.  The test was full of that kind of crap, I just evidently didn't quite memorize that section of the book well enough.  The rest of the questions I knew instantly, simply by virtue of reading the manual cover-to-cover twice.  I probably could've skipped the second reading and still passed easily.

Somehow I'm now more qualified to ride on the street than I was before the test though.  Funny, I don't feel any different ;)

You've got to expect such things when living in Oregon.  It is the Nanny State.  Somebody has to look out for you.  Remember, you can't be trusted to pump your own gas into your car.  Gotta have a trained professional do it for you.  Max speed on rural Oregon  Interstates is still 65 MPH.  Can't be having people going 75 between Baker and Ontario. Way too dangerous, they might hurt themselves.  Jeez, even Washington state lets you go 70.  Look at all the hoops you have to jump through to shoot a deer in Oregon, even though the state is crawling with them, making it hazardous to drive at night.

Oregonians seem to like it the way it is, tho, so who am I to judge.

I passed thier dam driving test this time!  I got my endorsement....well after i go to the DMV and pay thier $35.

I did the same course, drove the same bike, one week later.......difference? Different instructors.......

I drove that course the same way.  in the end, when they said i passed,  i asked the instructor how i did he said great, didnt miss a point. Hmmmm......it is all subjective and depends on what teacher you get, and what mood they are in if you ask me.

Note to all that are taking the oregon dmv test:

Take your class/test at the Sylvania Campus, everyone that was there to retest with me took the initial class/test at the Capital center pcc. There were 10 people there to retest. All of them said they were from Capital center initially, which tells me Capital center has some hard ass instuctors. My instructors from Sylvania were nice guys with a sense of humor, and during the test seemed to grade easier.

I took the BRT course at the Albany (LBCC) campus this weekend.  Great instructors, good group of other riders (most with at least some experience, a few with none at all).  It ended up being a good experience.  I passed easily, I missed a perfect score on the driving portion because I didn't brake quite hard and/or soon enough in the brake test (missed it by six inches) otherwise I'd have had a perfect score on the driving portion.  I missed one question on the knowledge test so I only ended up with a 98% on that too.  After hearing everybody else's experience, I was expecting much worse, so I'm pleasantly surprised about the whole thing, and now I can stop worrying about it ;)

See you on the road!
