Oil temperature and pressure transducer
« on: September 11, 2005, 09:40:43 PM »
Well, I'm an electrical engineer, so I've got no excuse not to make my bike a testbed for wacky inventions. I want to put in a multifunction display, just a cheapo LCD screen that gives me numbers. I figure, in an ancient machine like this, it makes a lot of sense to be able to spot problems quickly. So I want to be able to see oil temp, pressure, battery voltage, and current. And probably some other things. I can do this all on one screen, you know, push a button to see a stat. And I can make it a bit smart, so if a stat passes a threshold, for instance if your oil pressure drops, it can flip to that stat and beep or something. I figure I can mount it under the speedometer on the speedo bracket. There's a couple of inches in there, more than enough, and reasonably unobtrusive.

So two things: first, does anyone know a decent oil pressure transducer and oil temp sender unit that would screw into the oil pump threads on the SOHC bikes? And second, if there's interest in this and I can get it all working, would anyone out there be interested in this? If there's enough interest I suppose I could kit some up.

...I know I saw someone on the board not long ago who had some type of oil temp gauge that screwed into the oil pan...

would anyone out there be interested in this?

It appeals to the gadgeteer in me. I would be interested particlarly if it's installation could be made non-destructive and could be uninstalled and moved to another bike, for instance.

Seems to me that the stock oil pressure sending unit could be pulled and you could use that space.  That way there's no new drilling and it's nice and tucked away.  As for the unit, I'd check your local auto parts store.  I've seen something similar and I'm sure the threads could be adapted easily.  Just an idea.

I would definately be interested. I tinker a lot, and a kit would suit me fine!

Yep, make it and I would be interested. I was planning on doing something like this and fitting it into a spare "idiot light" plate that I have. Alas, I am neither an electrical engineer nor a mechanic and I am finding enough challenges getting this thing plugged and running correctly :)

They're available through Dennis Kirk, but they cost too much to canniballize it and stuff it into the idiot light plate.
