Schooled by a State Trooper
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:20:54 PM »
My wife's friend Amanda is married to a state trooper (Kurt).  He is a "rider" and has a Harley and a sweet ZRX 1200 (like the one I had).  I met up with him a bike night today and we decided to enjoy the awesome weather and hit some twisting roads.  Kurt had his ZRX this evening and lead the way.  Now, I don't think that I am a "slow" rider, but this evening, I felt like a beginner.  Kurt put so much distance between us in the turns that I felt like I was riding a mini-bike.  I tried to follow his lines, but was defeated even though it was some of the best riding I did this year.  Kurt took me to school... man can he ever ride that bike.  I thought that I was a good rider, now I see I either need bigger balls or more practice.

Try modern suspension, modern tyres and a modern chassis, you might not need the practice and balls.

You're never going to beat a modern bike in the twisties in a million years, sorry Arty my mate. ;)

At least you had the brains not to leave your balls stuck to the guardrail.

+1. The fact that he is a state tropper seems irrelevant, unless he does his job riding on a bike and therefore has a lot of practice. Had your wife's friend's hubby a plumber, would you have titled the thread "schooled by a plumber"?

Love the ZRX1200.

Raul, I figured that the title would grab some attention.

It did, at least with me. I was expecting to read how you ate humble pie to get out of an impending ticket.

I also love to see other people taking curves soooooooo smoothly. I hope some day I will have the same skill, or the same lack of common sense.

Dunno. I kinda thought that since he's a trooper, he might be able to get in more practice. That is, he gets to go fast with impunity from tickets, so he does it more. I would.

don't let it get to ya sparty... let me tell you a similar story...

elizabeth and i were coming back from a camping trip.  she was on her 88 ex500 i was on my 92 zx7r... she was just beginning to catch back up w/ me after i had been working out my wrist, when all of a sudden, a mean green zrx1200 flew by!  i saw him coming up on me and i whacked the throttle once again.  now, my 7r will get up to 140-150 in a real hurry... he not only passed me at around 140 (wide open, deserted road if that helps the naysayers) but continued to pull away until he was gone.  so, not only was he gone from my front but elizabeth was in the dust again... my only saving grace.   :D

there would be no way for an SOHC4 to keep up w/ a zrx1200... of course, this is only my zrx humbled opinion.   ;)

you need bigger balls! the way the bike handles the bends depends on the way u ride it, you have to forget death is round the corner for a sec and find your limits then push strait past em

Going past your limits usually means going off the road!  A cb will never take twistys like a well ridden sportbike. But then there has to be some improvement in 30 years right?
Even in the straight I doubt sparty could keep up. He is getting around 90 - 100 hp but the sporty is putting out probably 150 with less weight!

There's always somebody faster out there.  It's like trying to comprehend the universe.  There are whole levels of riding abiility I'll never be able to understand.  And then there's levels beyond that.  And then there are fast guys that make those guys shake their heads.

I was at Deal's Gap a few years ago on my VFR.  Zipping along and picking off groups of cruisers, goldwings, and slower sportbikes I felt pretty good.  On a short straight I hear a muffled "blaaat" and this old fart on a BMW GS running knobbies and loaded with luggage blows by me at about 100 MPH going into a 15 MPH hairpin.  Did he not see the corner coming up?  I cringe but can't look away from the nasty crash about to happen, and he just leans it over trails a few sparks and is gone.  W....T.....F.....I slowed down after that.

A scale of riding ability would look like this:

-pond scum---me-------------old guys on BMWs------------------------------------------------Valentino Rossi/God

I think a race between Rossi and God would come down to tire choice.

LOL awesome.

On topic, it is amazing to watch some people ride. I've always considered myself to be a good rider and can pretty much hop on anything and start dragging knee and passing people on bigger better handling bikes than what i'm on...But every once in a while I ride with or see someone and just think...holy cow!? It's nice to be put in your place every once in a while...keeps you honest and keeps you riding within your OWN limits.

breaking your limit usually means breaking your bones...
i just accept the fact that i'm not the fastest out there,i'll see em on a mx track with my race quad, see who's boss then... ;D ;D

i get blown away sometimes by all sorts of motorcycles, and i usually just let em go....there's a difference with being fast or being stupid....
sure they fly past you,but if you see what risks they take sometimes,it's just not worth it for me,no use being a hero while being 6 feet under.......at the end it's your life your playing with, not ready for a "game over" yet..... :'( :'(
