These yahoos certainly don't have a future in journalism but this is worth a look.

I saw a kit to make one in a bike magazine recently.  It looks like they could be a lot of fun.  I bet one could be made fairly cheap with sportbike take-offs.

I scanned it from a magazine advert for a concours event put on by www.legendofthemotorcycle.com on page nine of the May/June 2007 issue of Motorcycle Classics. There's another one but I can't find it just now... I'll keep my eyes peeled for it.

So Sam, what's your take on this proposed thumper class?

240 lbs. and 50 to 60 hp sounds like fun!

Racing  singles that's new, why not open the class up to 500 cc and allow any single to race, owner built, and see how much better the new bikes are than the classics. What goes around, comes around.

Def an interesting take on the current crop of 450 Moto X bikes. First thing i considered after reading about them was looking for an old CR500 two stroke and building something like that. Sure the Aluminum wheels are nice but drop the forks through the trees on the front end and lace up some 17" rims on the stock CR hubs and you have yourself a machine very close to them. Hell apply that idea to any old Motocross bike really and it becomes quite feasible.

The CR500 two stroke sure is a rush but the idea of these new classes is to get away from dirty two strokes.
If you have followed MX and SX recently you will have noticed 250 four strokes racing in the same class as 125 two strokes and the big 450 four strokes racing against 250 two strokes.
The idea is to faze out the two strokes altogether in GP as well as in MX/SX.
As some of you will know, I am currently campaigning a nitrous two stroke in an attempt on the land speed record in the 175 class.
Allthough it is a fantastic rush when the power comes in, the two stroke is far more expensive to maintain compaired to a four stroke.
To give you an idea of the service intervals on my bike, the ring needs replacing after 125 miles, the piston at 250, the crank at 500 and the cylinder at 1000 miles.
It's not just the price of the HRC parts, it's the continual strip downs. I'd much sooner be riding that wrenching.
A lot of people take up racing only to find out that the cost and time spent maintaining two strokes is a real bind.
A lot of very talented youngsters take up the sport, and then drop out due to the costs before they have been able to show their potential, and perhaps loosing the sport a could have been world champion.
All in all, I think the thumper classes are a good thing, even if it dose take me back to when I was a kid watching hoards of Manx Nortons doing battle with G50s, Gold Stars and Velos.

Sam. ;)

P.S. hope none of my mates from the two stroke forums see this ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've read an article on those Roland Sands designed 450 mono's . I'm pretty sure he designed them to use the stock frame, not a 250 roadracing frame.

That looks like a lot of fun. I bet you could build yourself something similar on a pretty tight budget.

Yes, that might be true but the RS chassis would be the ultimate and it's proven at GP level.
If I were to build one, that's the route I would go down. Second hand RS and a new motor, I saw some CRF motors for sale somewhere on the net but can't remember where.

I realise the reasoning for the new classes sam. The reason i was mentioning using something like the CR was because someone could build themselves a budget track bike around one instead of putting the money into a CBR or a GSXR for that first track machine.

I can see your reasoning, but it's only a matter of time and you will not be able to get parts for them.
The CR motors need parts replacing at the same intervals as my RS. Pistons and many other parts have not been available for these bikes (up to the 94 model) for quite some time now. People have to get modified cranks that take a later, still available piston to get round this problem.
I even considered coupling two CR500s together for the Super Twins Drag Racing Series but knowing how spares would be in a few years, decided against it.
