Dual disc mess up
« on: September 27, 2008, 05:50:17 PM »
Ok Guys what did I do wrong to cost me 27 dollars.
I was putting my two disc wheel together this afternoon. After bolting the discs to the wheel I put the axle through with the speedo drive and speedo drive plate on one side and a spacer on the other. As I start to tight the nut down I thought man this going to be tight but that what the write to said. So I tighten it some more and some more and just about half way in I heard a pop, I looked on the other side and my speedo drive was case was cracked. So what did I do wrong ?? The write up here http://www.sohc4.net/index.php?title=Dual_disc_conversion
says to remove a chrome dress ring. Was that the spacer??? Mine not chrome so I figured the part had been remover by the PO. But if it is the spacer, is it cool to just remove it?? part of it goes up in to the wheel like it protecting the bearing or something.

The speedo drive looks like it will still work but I don't want to put a crack part no my bike. There is one on eBay for 19.99 plus 7 shipping, figure that is not to bad.
I guess my stupidity costing me 27 bucks.

My drive plate does fit flat against the disc disk.

The other side without the spacer

How should it be modified??
I read a few post that said the 750 need to been cut, but never the 500.

Here are a couple pix that might help. The drive plate does need to be modified to fit tight against the hub, that's why your speedo gearbox broke. If your hub has two flat recesses this mod is what you need to do and it has to fit inside the rotor opening.

OK I see

Should the tabs go in all the way in to the hub or just far enough catch the side of the rotor?

I thought I had done all my research but I guess not

Thanks a lot Bwaller and Fishhead

The drive plate needs to completely fit inside the rotor hole tight against the hub, Then the spacer on the inside of the speedo g-box contacts the wheel bearing. The two tabs only have to locate in the recesses. Rotors are Suzuki.

Ricky,

Suzuki used those rotors on GS750's, Katana's and other models in the early to mid eighties. They are the same OD and offset as CB500/550. Minimum recommended thickness is 4.5mm but I went to 4 so one disc is over two lbs. lighter than stock. The center hole needed to be enlarged and the mounting holes don't match the Honda items either but can be made to work.

Bwaller that is a beautiful looking front end!!!! I lover to see the whole bike.

Is there a reason behind mounting the calipers backwards? ( I sure there is but I am ignorant about motorcycles)
Can it be done with the stock mounts and forks?
