G`day guys
Just got off the phone with the local honda dealership, #$%* i cant believe the prices they want for the things they still make.
Petcock strainer set.........$68.00
Side cover emblem...........$65.30 EACH
Tank emblem..................Discontinued, but they still stop anyone making replacements
Tool set........................$160.00

The problem is i will probably have to go through honda for mechanical replacement parts due to the damned expensive postage charged by any shops in the US or UK.
Any horror prices you guys have found?

Besides, compare the repair prices with the cost of a new bike and suddenly you have a bike that costs far less even with "expensive" parts, with similar utility.  Plus, you fixed it yourself.

Anyway, Honda does not owe you a free bike.  And, it is just silly for you to expect them to stock parts for 30 years and not make money on storage, handling and unit costs.

It's a perspective thing.

Very true but the dealers do ass rape on parts old or new i have experienced it if they want to compete with ebay or the internet they need to play ball ( simple enough)

I never expected a free bike, or even free parts, so calm down.
I was merely expressing my horror at the prices, $65.30 for 1 small plastic side cover emblem???

Ebay or the internet doesn't have employees to pay, lights to keep on, or give you a damn bit of customer service. There's no way for a dealership to compete with anything on the internet. The guys on the internet don't have anywhere near the overhead a shop does.

 But, if a dealership closes up, who's gonna b*tch, the guy that bought everything on the internet, can't find the one part to make their bike run, and wonder why their local shop closed up.

 Remember, it takes the same amount of inventory tracking and manpower to make and deliver a bolt, as it does to make and deliver a bike.

As far as the ebay guys go, I've seen parts that are still available from the local shop for $10, sell for $100 online....

Like Two Tired said...our parts are 30+ years old. It still costs money to make and store even our old parts.

My local honda dealer doesnt like doing discounts, even when they know you. I have been told the staff dont get discounts either although i really dont believe the boss is that much of a tight arse.
CMS wants that much because honda is asking so much, suply and demand i have been told, bull#$%* its pure GREED, honda knows we can only get some parts through them and so charges what it wants, other places charge as much as they can as long as they can undercut honda a little. All businesses have overheads, granted, but a part that would cost cents to make, cents to paint and cents to ship on a per unit basis, when made in batches of hundreds of thousands cannot justify such a huge mark up other greed.
Might have to look into making an injection moulder, even on a small per unit basis i could beat that price with my eyes closed

I`m talking of the side-cover emblems on my 76 750F, they look like

750Four

Dont know about plastic plating but i have one on home electroplating, i have others on annodising and foundry work. Hell i have em on most things tucked away in my files lol

Ain't that the truth.  Two months ago, after an abortive attempt to use parts from a Keyster kit bought off Ebay a couple of years ago, I ordered 4 jet needle sets from the local Honda dealer for my '75 750F.  The price was $20 each, 80 bucks total.  When I have to order parts from this dealer, they usually arrive within three days or so, but not this time.  A couple of days later, one of the gals there called me and told me that the kits weren't available in the country and were back-ordered to Japan.  Arrival date unknown.  Crap, I thought, so I asked her if they might have been discontinued.  She said she didn't know but it was possible.  So imagine my relief when I got a call a couple of weeks later that they were in.  At that point 80 bucks seemed cheap, even if it was for 8 little bits of metal.  I pride myself in being able to make stuff and otherwise make do, but I know I couldn't reproduce those needles.

I prefer to do business at my local Honda dealer. But not so much that I'm willing to pay double for my parts. There are a bunch of Asian dealers that will ship you NOS emblems very reasonably from thailand and elsewhere over there. Just make sure to check their feedback carefully.

It's not my responsibility to pay for the OH at my local dealer. If they can't keep the lights on, I'm sure someone else can. I guess this is what they mean by Globalism.

Is it shipping that's causing the price to be that high?  What bike?  Australian dollar conversion?  Or are they just that high?

I just checked their site and found the parts but theres no listing of availability, i wont be spending the money if i get told "we will send them when we get them" withot a definate date given, heard to many tales about folks being ripped off.
But if they are reputable and up front it looks like i will be gettng a few badges

I've ordered once and was pleased, but it was just a points assembly, so I'd expect that would be available.  servicehonda.com may have what you're looking for too.  I think I read they had a better stock or their site would let you know if it was available.  Check vendor reviews section?

He has a point. Hondas, except for maybe Harleys, are comparatively easy to get parts for when compared even to other Japanese makes, such as Yamaha. After learning about how hard it is to find parts as they changed the designs so often, I gave away the YCS-50 Scrambler project bike I had.

If you saw what any rusty, broken, bent pieces went for, for the 14 HD twin I would like to put together... you would sure think stuff for CB750 is very cheap.. even sandcast parts would look reasonable..

Went to the Yamiya site.. and checked out the prices.. will probably sell my K0 tach parts..

Nice to see that Two Tired isn't too tired.  Give'em hell!  Just kiddin' Troppo.  I caught one of Lloyd's comments out of the blue for asking an incomplete question and now take delight in seeing others similarly chastised.     Course now I expect to get at least a comment regarding my comments.... bring it on "old man"   

Nonetheless, I have seen several alternative websites listing nearly everything that you mentioned at not-unexpected prices.  Similarly, it's really a matter of how badly you want that piece of plastic.  BTW, Bikebandit has the emblems for around 35.00 (at least for the K's)... I haven't looked for the F's... Also, a real quick look at the Hondaparts-direct site shows reasonable pricing (if it's only available). 

What burns my ass is that while unwilling to provide replacement parts, Honda does not allow 3rd party vendors the opportunity to make replacement parts.  Seems that Soichiro Honda's edict of providing replacement parts forever went by the way side in favor of forcing the masses into buying new products.
