Recently bought a CB750F in Columbia SC... PO said it wouldn't keep a charge, appeared mostly intact and only about 30k miles.
Took home, and after spending about $30 bucks on a new battery and a few hours tracing wiring, found Volt Reg wired backwards, some wires unplugged in headlight nacelle. put back together, hit the starter, and in about 1 rotation started up! (but shot to maybe 3000rpm before I killed it!)
put on maybe 100miles, battery going down, so started a little basic maintenance. Thats when I went to check points, found a Dyna III ignition w/ stock coils: then went to clean air filter, found a K&N... someones been working on this baby a while back!! could be good or bad. am reading and learning about electrics and coils right now, great forum. looking at alternator now: is there supposed to be oil in the alternator chamber on the SOHC? I'm getting mixed answers from people locally... I have some, not a lot, but some in the alternator side cover.
I also ride dirt bikes with my college age son and friends (84 XL3550R), plus have an old CB 350G thats been in family since new that I'll restore after I get the 750 running reliably!
Like a lot of us, started riding in jr high on honda 50, went to SL125 & 305 dream, then MR250 Elsinore (wish I still had that one!), then Kaw KDX250(wish I still had that one, too...), then stopped riding for maybe 10years, then a Kaw 1500 Vulcan Classic (wish I kept that one too), now the XL 350R, CB350G, and son's Yam XT200. Worked on fixing up every one except the KDX 250, when I was more interested in my soon to be wife... I kept that one.
I'll be searching this Forum a lot, I like Hondas & CB750s, great bikes... I'll also be looking for HondaMan's advice on the proper coils to go with the DynaIII, plus maybe his resistor pak.
