In desperate Need!!! - - - Update 10/14/08 - WOO HOO!!
« on: October 06, 2008, 09:03:14 AM »
So if you had been following my build thread, you would have seen that I broke a ring putting my engine back together. I've got a 78 750 bored out for the Cycle-X 850 kit. Due to whatever issues are going on over at Cycle-X, I have been unable to get a hold of them for a replacement.

Does anyone just happen to have a spare set of rings for this kit? Or know of where I could get a new ring made? My Cam is arriving today and this is the only thing holding me me back from getting this engine together.

Whats the exact bore size?
It probably matches some stock size so its just a case of finding an engine with that bore.
If you have racing pistons with extra narrow rings, easy to find, just use late model bikes as most use 1~1.5mm top and 4~4.5mm oil control.
Just a case of finding manual online (check piston ring grooves for ring width)
This works every time, but, does take some effort

Hi,
If you can supply the bore size and the thickness of the rings in mm, I might be able to find Wiseco replacements. E mail ken@orientexpress.com or call me at 631-231-9552

please correct me if I am wrong but aren't the 350 twin rings the same size? I might be thinking of the 836 kit though

I've found that Sue handles the bulk of correspondence over at Cycle-X and that she can sometimes be gone a day or two at a time. Best method for me to reach them has been by phone. Tuesday thru Thursday 10-4 EST is when I've had the best luck. They're a true "Mom and Pop" shop, just the two of them I think, so hope that they are just away temporarily or very busy. How long have your requests gone unanswered?

I recently installed the same kit, advertised as .5mm larger than Wiseco 836 kit(or 65.5mm bore). The 3-piece oil ring is an EMGO product but I had no luck finding EMGO piston products on the Web. Which ring did you break?

It was the second ring that broke on me. It's been about three weeks since I've been trying to get a hold of them. I got one e-mail responce from Sue telling me to call and that was two weeks ago. Every time that I have called, the phone just kept ringing.

here is a side profile of the ring:

The bore is listed as 65.5mm. The top of the piston measured about 65mm with my calipers. I found a 65.5mm piston for a Honda ATC200X 0.50 overbore kit. I have no idea about the profile of the ring, though (it's a wiseco kit on the bike bandit site).

Damn, that IS frustrating, especially with an engine on the bench :P >:(

If you got the bored cylinders from them then check the threaded bolt holes(6 on top, 3 at the tensioner) for sandblasting media. The two outside holes and three tensioner holes were still full of sand on mine and I didn't notice until head was already bolted down.

if your bore size is 65.5mm, there is nothing available from Wiseco or JE pistons

The 350 twin rings fit the Yoshi 810 kit. Been there done that. 350 twin 2nd over size maybe for 836?

The ATC ring will be same section but I don't think its possible to buy just one piston ring from anywhere ( unless someone broke top or bottom and still has others spare) EMGO are an aftermarket supplier to the trade, probably not available except to dealer

Well, I'm fully prepared to buy a full set. I have no issues with that. It's just finding one that fits, you know?

Well, I placed an order for the ATC Ring set. When they get here I'll measure them and see if they are same. Best case senario, it will work. Worst case senario, I'll get charged a restocking fee. I've gotta do something. Maybe I can call Total Seal and get a set of gapless rings made up if this doesn't work?

I don't know if this helps, but doing a google search for "65.5mm piston" brings up some stuff including:

http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp;jsessionid=JI2TVKH43X2ANLA0WTISM4VMDK0OWIV0?store=Main&skuId=2579XC

After reading your story I also called CycleX and got the endless ring (no pun intended)...Good luck with your search...

Those are listed to fit the ATC200, which is the ring set I just got.

Just sent an e-mail to Total Seal to see what the cost of a custom set of rings would be. We'll see what they offer up. In the mean time, I'll keep trying Cycle-X.

For those with the Cycle-X 850 kit, Total Seal sells a second ring that will fit the 65.5mm pistons!!! Total Seal part number 207998. Avaliable from JEGS for $17.99 a peice (+S&H). I've got four on order and wil, soon be back in business.
