Stupid bikers, are you one?
« on: September 20, 2005, 09:20:00 PM »
Ok. Fess up. What did you do that was stupid?
Me? Never!
But this past weekend....a bunch of riders on motorcycles (ie, $25,000 bikes, driven on weekends, by over paid executives,
 to impress the neighbors),
stopped in front of me in the oncoming lane. One idiot, screams into my lane, and STOPS! forcing me to stop from 55mph:
 while all his freinds did
illegal U-turns.

I was not happy, my Ford F-150 was not happy, but the Shotgun stayed in the rack.

And you wonder WHY people don't like bikers?

And That is why I don't ride in groups with Harley-Dumb-son drivers.

PS. I am reformed, and am no longer a stupid biker. Just a smarter one.

I am not a stupid biker anymore: could it be age? or the fact I no longer ride a V-Max, GSX750, GSX1100 etc etc and ride more tame machines CB550/cb750's? Maybe we could demand a study be done by the NHII National Highway Insurance Institute, or the HHA, Harley Haters of America.

The thin, cotton tshirts allow easy access to the vital organs that are about to be harvested for transplant. You wouldn't want full leathers or a spine suit spoil a good kidney or liver, would you?

I doubt very few of us actually dress in full leathers or suit ALL the time. You would pass out from heat doing that in the summer if the temp was over 80 degrees. I dress according to temp and where I am riding. If I do hiway, then full outfit is ok but the lower speeds in town cause me to fog my helmet causing me to not be able to see so I do not use full dress then. This is of course dependent on temp.

Besides outfits do nothing for riding skills. If you suck, you suck no matter what you wear and maybe you should not wear anything then so you either heal and learn or never ride again and endanger others.

I believe that if you hit him, you are at fault. Something about maintaining control of your vehicle.

If you hit someone from the rear, that is true, you will almost always be found to be at fault.
I'm not sure that is the case if you hit someone while they are in the act of an illegal turn or if they fail to yield when required.

Jeans are one thing and boots. Personally boots never offer that same foot peg grip a good pair of hiking shoes do. I am talking about chaps and leather jacket or those racing pants and jackets. No matter what they say, you will not stay as cool at anything above 80 as if you just wear a shirt.
I always try to wear a helmet but it sure gets hot when it is 90.

Merv, I dont think many of us would look too good riding naked! Besides those black vinyl seats get HOT in the sun! ;D

Just look at the tuaregs, they have all their skin covered even with the strongest sun. Yoy dehydrate less with your riding jacket. While stopped it's a pain, but once moving I don't feel my leather jacket is that unconfortable. I open the zip a little to help ventilation and that's it, though sometimes for short trips (20 mins) I admit sometimes I just wear my T-shirt, but only in my small commuter bike. I feel safer on it that in the big CB750, it's like riding a bicycle without having to pedal.

I mainly ride in town/ Most accidents that happen are going to be stupid drivers hitting you in their cars. A jacket will not help that situation at all unless you have armor in it! Jackets are good against wind abrasion and road rash but do little against a car or truck.

I suppose a person should wear what they think they need as long as it does not affect their movement. I will never wear a leather jacket for that very reason. I had one for years and it was too short in length and sleeves but huge in the chest I suppose to hold a harley gut.

Racing jackets are easier to talior to a persons size and have pads in elbows, shoulders, and back.

But it is all what a person likes.

What happens AFTER the car or truck hits you?  You've got a one-way ticket to the pavement.  And no matter how fast you're going, (good quality) riding leather will stop all that gravel and grit from imbedding itself in your skin and ripping you to pieces.  So as soon as I can afford a quality jacket, I'm buying it.

I would prefer sweat and a broken bone to comfort and a broken bone and excessive road rash (cause I've had road rash before from a sudden meeting with a ditch...  and I still have scars on my arms/back to prove it, all preventable if I had been wearing leather)

I usually like to substatiate my opinions with some facts, but realize that any source of information can be discredited easily (see the handgun thread). I looked on the nhsta website and found the following quote:

"The most frequent injury to the crash-involved motorcyclist is abrasion. A wide range of apparel provides proven protection from abrasion (Hurt, 1981a). Leather, used in garments to cover virtually all of a motorcyclist’s body, can prevent abrasion including serious deep abrasions, has a traditional appeal to many motorcyclists and is currently fashionable. A variety of leather grades, construction, and styles is available, and many leather garments offer extensive features to accommodate motorcyclists’ needs. Not all leather garments, even all of those styled in a manner that suggests motorcycle use, are sturdy enough to provide significant abrasion protection (Woods, 1994a, 1994b). Various types of effective synthetic materials have been offered in recent years."

Do with it what you will. I'm glad they are concerned about what is fashionable!
